December 15, 2016 Meeting Notes

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION
Karen Goh introduced “Doc” Ervin as a new member to the Rotary Club of Bakersfield.  Doc took on the role as Superintendent of the Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) on July 1, 2016.

Mr. Ervin came to BCSD after having served as Superintendent for the Greenfield Union School District in Monterey County. He brings a wealth of experience to BCSD having served as a classroom teacher, school principal, and assistant superintendent at various school districts across the state. Having served more than 20 years in education, Mr. Ervin has dedicated his career to bringing equity and access to economically disadvantaged students from culturally diverse backgrounds and ensuring that high expectations lead to increasing student achievement for every student, in every classroom, every year.

Prior to Greenfield, Mr. Ervin served as the Assistant Superintendent of the Partnerships for Los Angeles Schools for six years where he established key initiatives that resulted in strong gains for all students, outpacing Los Angeles Unified School District and area districts in overall Academic Performance Index growth as measured by the California Standards Tests.

Mr. Ervin, who is fluent in Spanish, received both his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies and his Master of Science in Education

Administration from Alliant International University, and his Administrative Credential from California State University, Fullerton. He is a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps.  Doc gave some of his acceptance speech in Spanish thoroughly confusing all of the Anglos!!

GOOD NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The Nicaragua Trip will be November 4-12, talk to Jeff Green if you are interested in attending.
  • President Dave announced that we have $2500 to spend this fiscal year or it will evaporate.  The Board suggested building a water feature at the entrance to Camp KEEP.  Who wants to volunteer on that project?
  • President Dave informed us of the Annual Meeting which will be held this year on March 23rd and next week’s meeting will also be off site at CSUB.
  • Today was the anniversary of a famous lunch by four businessmen in Chicago on this day in 1905.  Who can name the four participants on that historical day??
  • Garro reminded us about the Waterman Foundation applications - from some beach somewhere… sounds like the start of a country song!

THE PROGRAM
Bryan Burroughs introduced our program today.  Emma Morris and Megan Silcott from Brock Center for Agricultural Communication. They went on to deliver a very informative program regarding the Center out of Cal Poly SLO.

Emma is a six generation agricultural family from Siskiyou County and is a Brock Associate this year.  Megan hails from Santa Maria and is a graduate of Cal Poly in Ag Science and is the director of the Brock Center.  The purpose of the Center is to help build a bridge of communication with the agriculture industry, media and the public.  They locate and attract prospective undergraduate students to be a part of the Brock Center.  They also work closely with other departments at Cal Poly, including Communications, Liberal Studies and Humanities.  The Brock Center for Agricultural Communication was established through the generosity of Jim Brock and his wife Martha.

Their lifelong commitment to agriculture will be continued through the center. It is one answer to the expressed need of the agriculture industry for help with efforts to improve communication with the public.

The center started in 1986 with an endowment of $1.5 M and a vision.  Megan supervises 4 other amazing young ladies and their main projects are the publishing of the annual Ag Circle magazine, holding a series of ag forums at Cal Poly, photo services, and participating in many associations throughout the state with agriculture and communications.  Great job ladies!!
