HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE OCTOBER 7TH PROGRAM

• The conductor uses a combination of body language and the baton to keep the rhythm, tempo and dynamic of the music.
• A conductor also acts as a manager, maintaining order, creating excitement and commitment.
• There is a balance between the cerebral and the emotional when conducting.
• Stilian plays the piano and the oboe.
• Stilian's birthplace is Bulgaria.
• He was destined to be a conductor from a young age. He studied music in France and then, in 2006, applied to music schools. He was later accepted to Juilliard. Juilliard is notoriously one of the world's most exclusive music schools. In fact, it's acceptance rate is often among the lowest in the entire country, along with Stanford, Harvard, Curtis, and Yale. In previous years, it has been as low as 5.5% and as high as 8%.
• First job after school was being the assistant conductor in Memphis. Later he was a conductor in Seattle and finally here in Bakersfield where he was chosen after a American Idol type of competition between five other conductors.

• To sum it up, in Stilian's words, a conductor is a musician, diplomat and a  psychiatrist.
