THE SPOKE
Thanks to his week's correspondent:
Roland Maier

Key Highlights From July 14th Program

  • Outgoing President Pat Collins gave our incoming President David Morton his official pin to begin the meeting.
  • President David (no nickname yet) gave Pat a few parting gifts, slippers, unused toiletries, pin from International Convention to thank him for his year of service.
  • Linda Jay celebrated her 11th grandbaby.
  • Mary Barlow spoke of Kern River Valley relief efforts going on the area.  The local Rotary Club there is spearheading efforts to assist the residents trying to rebuild but lack insurance to do that.  The club pledged more than $3,000 towards that effort with Mary pledging $500 to spearhead the effort.
  • Dick Porter received a California Agricultural Heritage Club award for serving the ag communities in CA for 100 years or more.  Porter Citrus was formed in 1904, which is one year before Paul Harris started Rotary in 1905. Coincidence???

Good News & Announcements

  1. The proverbial question for the day was “Who’s Got It Better Than Us?”  President Dave gave many examples to assist the club members to understand the answer was "NOBODY"!!
  2. President David retold a story of Rotary and many facts related to its history.
  3. Dave introduced his new Bakersfield Rotary Leadership team for the 16-17 Rotary year.  It is going to be a great year if we can get the team to show up for meetings!!
  4. Tracy Walker-Kiser was responsible for the outstanding lunch from Luigi’s and the table decorations including the wine!!  Great job Tracy!  She will also be the new Social Director and President David would like to have more social gatherings for the members.
  5. Speaker gifts will be a $50 scholarship to Camp Keep for a student who would otherwise not be able to attend.
