Vintage pic of Pete Pankey teaching a young lady how to throw a Frisbee.

This day in history

Wham-O toy company rolled out the first batch of Frisbees.  Named for William Frisbie, who owned a pie company and university students used to throw the pie tins and yell “Frisbie” so people wouldn’t get hit.  The pie tins then morphed into the plastic discs we know today.

New Member introduced by Ken BeurmannMark Barnes.  Born and raised in Bakersfield, attended BHS, BC and CSUB.  He had perfect attendance K-12 grades, let’s see if he can keep that up with perfect attendance at Rotary!  He owns Minute Man Press and his classification is Marketing.  He is married to his wife Lindsey and they have 2 boys.  WELCOME TO THE CLUB!

Lisa Amarillas from the Kern County Public Health Department shared their new program with us called “Know Your Numbers”, a FREE 6-week program to help Kern County residents get healthier.  Currently, Kern County is rated #1 for deaths from Heart Disease and Diabetes.  The Know Your Numbers campaign includes a nurse evaluation who measures your BMI (body mass index), blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.  A pilot program in Buttonwillow demonstrated positive results with the pilot group improving their numbers from all their baseline screenings.
In addition, Lisa shared with us how to help keep our New Year Resolution(s).  Set SMART Goals – be Specific, make the Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.  You will have much more success.  Good Luck and Keep it up!
