THE PROGRAM

Kern County Director of Public Health Matt Constantine and Public Relations Office Michelle Corson presented statistics on the current epidemic level of STD cases in Kern County. Matt Constantine explained that while the community tends to focus on outbreaks like West Nile Virus, yet there were only 30 confirmed cases of West Nile in all of 2017. Meanwhile, Kern County has epidemic levels of sexually transmitted disease (STD) which aren’t as widely discussed. Presently there are 6,864 new cases of Chlamydia, 2,265 new cases of Gonorrhea, and 698 new cases of Syphilis reported to the Public Health in 2017. Those numbers are staggering and are not improving. New dating websites and dating apps that allow people to easily connect online for sex are also contributing to the problem.

To combat this problem, Matt Constantine and Michelle Corson presented initiatives they are working on at the Kern County Department of Public Health. They are taking “Three Phase Approach” to educating the public on the dangers. Utilizing billboards and other forms of media they plan to put very strong messages out to alert the public to the dangers. The second phase of the approach is going to churches and schools and working with those organizations to help share the message. The third phase is closing down hard to reach clinics in the outlying areas like Lamont and Mojave for example and instead implementing a new more accessible Mobile Clinics to better serve those areas. Kern County Department of Public Health was the first in the state to develop a platform to bill insurance for their services they provide which has generated income that will help fund some of these new efforts.
