Good News & Announcements

  • Jessie Lopez gave props to Steve Illingworth for receiving the Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts for his outstanding contributions and support he's given them.
  • Jordan Kaufman mentioned the upcoming fundraiser for the United Way called "A Chocolate Affair". Save the date- Saturday, January 20th.
  • Win Eaton invited anyone that was interested in joining him on the powdery slopes of Mammoth.
  • President Steve shared a video of some extreme bellringer techniques- courtesy of Pat Collins.
  • After three years of effort, a project of Jim Damion's came to fruition. Thanks to the generous donations of Girish Patel and Al Patel, Jim managed, through a series of matching grants, to turn their $21,000+ donation in to a whopping $66,000 donation to benefit underprivileged children in India. Congratulations!

The Program

Scott Spielman started his presentation with a run down of what he calls "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly".

Most things the DA's office has to do with the Bad and the Ugly... but there is one unforgettable GOOD day at the courthouse each year...

The Good: Adoption Day. Also hi office has started a new division called "Victim Services". It helps veterans and those with mental issues get out of the the criminal system.
The Bad: More and more laws being passed that make it hard to prosecute and punish criminals.
The Ugly: New Bail Reform law that will based bail on personal life situations such as job situation, income, savings, etc. rather than the current way based on how dangerous they are to the public and if they are a flight risk. The new law means means most criminals, the really bad ones, will get lower bail.

Spielman asked one of the founders of Life Interrupted, Nancy Chaffin, to talk about her personal experience of losing her son to a DUI incident. She was instrumental in getting Life Interrupted off the ground.

Spielman talked a bit about Life Interrupted. “Life Interrupted” gives about 100 presentations a year, to high schools, middle schools, service groups and larger companies that have safety programs. The aim of the presentations is to try to show the dangers and impacts of impaired driving, especially when it kills or injures people. They have a mobile DUI crash trailer that vividly displays the devastating outcome of a car crash accompanies most presentations. He also shared some of the videos they use in their presentations.

It was a very powerful presentation on the dangers of drunk or distracted driving.
