Get to know a Rotarian:Dave Oliver was born and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire and went on to become a pilot for the U.S. Navy. His business career included six years working for a Greek shipping company. Believe it or not, Dave and his wife chose Bakersfield as their retirement home because of its climate!
Ken Beurmann regaled the club with his report about the scintillating PETS training seminar which he recently attended. One item that caught his attention was the decline in Rotary membership in the U.S. and in our own club. Ken has proposed some creative incentives to encourage the recruitment of new members. The Downtown Rotarian who brings in the most new members will receive the coveted Sheryl Beurmann award.
Program
Jason Cater introduced Jessica Burzlaff, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who also teaches at CSUB and established the Platform Theater Company for local foster youth. Her topic was "Love Connection: Managing Healthy Conflict in Relationships. Jessica shared a case study of a young couple experiencing the stresses of raising two young children. Communication suffers when a partner feels attacked during times of conflict, leading to the person shutting down which means nothing gets resolved. Jessica has studied the work of Drs. John & Julie Gottman, who have discussed that when one partner makes a bid for connection (to feel safe, heard), there are three possible responses: turn toward, against or away. In times of conflict, happy and healthy couples turn toward more than away or against.
Jessica's young couple in the case study turned out to be herself and her husband, who had recently responded in a moment of conflict with words that made her feel safe and heard. Her final thoughts were suggestions to treat your partner like a friend, assume the best, handle conflict gently and learn how to repair after conflict.
Jessica closed her program by remembering her late father, John Petrini, saying that she felt his presence among his fellow Rotarians.
