Program:
By Madeline Abernathy
Miss Abernathy offered an intriguing and emotionally rich telling of the story of how the Vietnam War Memorial came into existence. Madeline began with a grieving mother,
Emogene Cupp, who was still reeling at the loss of her son (1968) a decade after his death. Miss Abernathy then depicted the passion of
Jan Scruggs, a veteran committed to honoring those who paid the ultimate price in Vietnam. She then offered insight to some of the controversies surrounding the design, proposal and building of the Memorial through the eyes of the architect,
Maya Lin. Ultimately, Madeline Abernathy reminded us of the power of healing orchestrated through this moving memorial in Washington, DC.
