[Chief Editor's Note]
I asked Garro, who was sitting next to me what "Auld Lang Syne" meant? He muttered " Old Friends". But I didn't believe him. So I Googled it. He wasn't far off. I think he heard that translation from Meg Ryan in
When Harry Met Sally (
https://youtu.be/RpW1lccxogQ). But I digress. The point is that the phrase "auld lang syne" is not recognizable to English speakers because it is not an English phrase, it's Scottish. Translated literally it means "old long since," but the meaning is more like "old times" or "the olden days." I think it's sort of a dumb song, but sound better when you're drunk.

Program
Today’s guest, Taylor Dougherty, was introduced by her mother, Toni Harper
Taylor is a senior at Frontier High School and the 2020 recipient of Beautiful Bakersfield Outstanding Youth Award. She has had a stutter since childhood and has turned her journey and experiences into an advocacy to bring awareness and understanding to this condition.
She shared facts and myths that are commonly held about stuttering including that people can stutter while they type, write and sing. As well, people who stutter make 20.2% less per hour than their counterparts.
People tend to think that stuttering is a “habit that can be broken”, or is “caused by emotional trauma”. In fact, stuttering is linked to certain genetic and brain alterations. Unfortunately, there are very few speech therapists who specialize in stuttering.
Toni shared that as a parent it was very frustrating to get help for Taylor. (And it historically believed that stuttering was caused by poor parenting – as if!). Eventually, they came in contact with the American Institute of Stuttering (AIS) which is staffed entirely by people who stutter.
They embrace their clients and use methods to help them minimize – but not be ashamed of their conditions. Taylor hopes to become a speech pathologist and specialize in stuttering. She is a remarkable young woman who definitely make a huge difference in the world!
