Stefanie Wickensheimer, executive assistant for Rio Bravo Ranch, presented the history of the Ranch. Henry Miller (Heinrich Kreiser) immigrated to the US in 1846 from Germany and ultimately owned 1.4 million acres stretching the length of California. She shared with us how the early generations of the Nickel Family were tied to Kern County back to the 1800’s. George Nickel, being a long time member of Bakersfield Rotary and grandson of Miller. She spent some time on how the family decided to plant olives among their citrus operation. She described the harvest and milling aspect of olive processing as each member tasted various olive oils. Rio Bravo grows seven different varieties on 50 acres at the old Merle Haggard home. She brought several different olive oil varieties for members to sample which can also be tasted at the offices on Hwy 178 at Coseree’s Kitchen Deli.
Pres Steve closed the meeting a 12:40pm and reminded us we will be dark next week.
