Good News Announcements:

Justin Leland shared with us that his kidney was a perfect match for Girish Patel's transplant, and he was set to go, but another last-minute match in the unfortunate circumstances of death, saved Justin's kidney for another time.

Mike McCoy announced that the long-overdue Lori Brock Museum is finished and turned out fabulous!

Joe Gregory's business Grapevine MSP was recognized for appearing on Inc. Magazine's 5000 Fastest Growing Businesses list... for the third consecutive year! Congratulations Joe!

Jim Damian's business, Stria, was also recognized in Inc. Magazine's 5000 Fastest Growing Businesses list as well. Pretty impressive young Rotarians in this club!

In this week's Getting Down to Business segment (which really needs to be renamed because no one, featured thus far, runs any kind of business), President Garro recognized 87-year-old John Kelly, who holds the title for most years in our downtown Rotary at 22 years. He joined our club the year the Dodgers won the World Series in 1963.

AJ Patel made it just in time to invite Mayor Karen Goh to speak at the closing ceremony of Medical Camp at Amritsar (our twin city) in March 2020. it's all part of the Playful India project and the Medical Yatra in Ludhiana, Punjab which screened 6,300 patients, prescribed 1,127 eyeglasses also 856 patients were referred for further medical tests and 113 successful surgeries were performed... ALL at NO COST!

Program:

Sonya Christian, President of Bakersfield College, introduced head football Coach Jeff Chudy of Bakersfield College. She also extended an invite to any Rotary members to join her in her President's Box for a game.

Coach Chudy started out with a slide show and update on the Memorial Stadium renovation. Bakersfield now boasts a first-class football field and track.

Coach Chudy used a great analogy for what it's like to run a two-year college football program. He said it's like having 60% of your employes quite every year and having to educate the new recruits all over again.

Fun Fact: Student-athletes at BC have a higher GPA than the average student attending.

Another Fact: 95% of the football players are local.

Last fact: The average attendance is 3,671 per game, the highest in the league. The closest contender is College of the Canyons with 2,671.

Visitors & Guests:

Roger Fessler guest of Ray Watson
Anana Joven and Robert Price guest of Andrae Gonzalez
Sonya Christian, footballer Zach, Coach Chudy and another football coach, pose with a smile.
A group of BC staff pose with Robert Price from the Californian and Sonya Christian in the back.
Sonya shows off a recent Californian article.
87 year old John Kelly, sandwiched between Shawn Kelly and Brad Barnes.
The look on Ben Stinson's face, says that trying the mystery salad was a bad idea.
Everyone thought these items on each table were actual samples of the new turf. I asked about it and, basically, Coach Chudy said "I don't know what the heck those are, but it ain't turf."
AJ Patel had a tough time keeping it brief, but gave a quick update on Playful India. President Garro, itching to ring the bell, stands fast.
BONG! And we were out of there.
