Program B3K Prosperity:
Jason Cater introduced Nick Ortiz and Kristen Beall Watson, who has more than 30 years of leadership experience throughout the community with an accolade of accomplishments behind her, including a doctorate from UCLA. Nick is still officially a member of our club, and president of the Chamber of Commerce and has a bachelor in politics with two wonderful children.
B3K Prosperity is a collaboration among business, government, and civic leaders to jointly create and deliver a shared economic growth and opportunity strategy and investment plan for the Bakersfield-Kern region. B3K aligns diverse efforts to maximize impact in advancing a common agenda for regional prosperity, with quality job creation that is both enduring and accessible to all residents. This process involves broad, ongoing community engagement, guided by a Steering Committee of 150+ stakeholders.
They want to improve the quality of jobs for a greater Bakersfield economy long term. The city is putting its first economic development strategy through a public-private partnership. B3K has a lot of local government representatives along with private sector representatives across all industries and communities.
B3K will produce a research-based approach to successfully implementing the execution of specific goals and operationalizing the plan to complete said goals. They took associated costs for different familial setups and included a savings aspect and found that half of all Kern County residents are struggling to make ends meet and included metrics such as race, education, and age.
They found that $20.20/hr would lift 50% of kids in struggling working families to self-sufficiency. Instead of redistributing the pie, they are focused on creating “good jobs.” B3K is focusing on bringing trade sector jobs to Kern County.
Bakersfield needs to produce 100,000 good or promising jobs within the next 10 years to combat the loss of oil and ag jobs being lost. They are hoping to implement the finished product by May of 2021. For more info please visit
