WEEKLY BULLETIN • APRIL 30, 2020
Thanks to his week's correspondent:
Mike Willis

Invocation: Jeff Chandler
Flag Salute: Jim Damian

This Day in History:

Evard Munch's $120 million painting titled "The Scream" was stolen from the National Gallery in Oslo. The thieves left a note reading "Thanks for the poor security".

Keith Richards wrote the hook for "Satisfaction" in his sleep and recorded a rough version of the riff on a cassette player. He had no idea he had written or recorded it. He said when he listened to the recording in the morning, there was about two minutes of acoustic guitar before you could hear him drop the pick and "then me snoring for the next forty minutes".

Program

Jim Damian introduced our guest speaker for today. David Riess. Riess is an associate professor of sociology at BC and former therapist. His topic was "Surviving the Pandemic".

He offered some insights and thoughts on dealing with fear and uncertainty. To do so, you need to generate empathy and gratitude.

This is also a good time to forge a new identity. "Who are you in the midst of this crisis?" Define what you want to be, then pursue it.

You can't control the outcome of this crisis, so detach yourself from the outcome and do the best you can daily.

Being confused means that you have an opportunity to learn something new.

Our brains are programmed to look for things to fear. A lot of times we fear the unknown, as with this pandemic, we fear not knowing the future. So, rather than dwell on the unknown, dwell on the positive things you do know. "I have my health. I love my wife. I still have a job. The AC works. I have toilet paper."

Acknowledging the positive things we are sure of, helps to keep the brain focused on what we know, rather than on the things we fear.

Or something like that.
A record turnout of over 40 members for today's meeting.
Eddy Paine has gone native.
Best VR background goes to Joe Gregory, here in the command chair of a star ship.
Jim Damian teleported a Rotary t-shirt to our guest speaker David Riess at the end of his presentation.
