PROGRAM:
Craig Needham, founding partner with the firm Needham Kepner & Fish LLP in San Jose, shared a truly incredible story of his mother’s battle with polio, and the lessons he learned from the amazing woman.
Jane Boyle Needham was born in 1920, and at age 29, the mother of three was stricken with polio and lived in an Iron Lung for 13 years. Though she had feeling in her entire body, she was only able to move her finger on her left hand. Still, she wrote a book about her experience, entitled “Looking Up.” She died in 1962, and Craig shared he learned immensely from his mother, including how to dance believe it or not.
“I remember my mother most as someone who told me the facts of life,” he said. In the end, Craig thanked Rotary for helping rid polio from all but two countries in our world (Afghanistan and Pakistan). “I’m here to thank you for saving millions of people from what my mom had,” he said. “God bless you.”
