Good News and Announcements:
Good news…this week is President Justin’s demotion! So please mark your calendars and plan to attend this Thursday, June 30th, at noon back at our regular meeting place, the Bakersfield Museum of Art.
For our newer Club members who joined Rotary this year and do not know what Demotion is, Past President Ken Beurmann explains it this way, “Demotion is a way to honor the outgoing Club President, and to say ‘thank you so much’ for all the hard work you've dedicated to Rotary over the past year. The event is meant to be a celebration, and when done appropriately it would make the writers of a Comedy Central Roast jealous.” Past President Ken is sure to put on a show as we say “happy trails” to President Justin! Don’t miss out!
Other excitement:
- Sydney Ralphs, Relationship Manager of Mission Bank, was welcomed as the newest member of the Club. As a welcome gift, President Justin gave Sydney his signature which he claimed may be worth more than a bitcoin someday.
- Members Rick Anthony and Vin Dang were recognized as Paul Harris Fellows (the best award money can buy).
- President Justin thanked his Board of Directors for carrying him uphill all year. As a token of appreciation for the heavy lifting, President Justin gave the Board Members a coin commemorating the time Justin was airlifted from the John Muir Trail.
- President Justin gave out more awards because that’s what people do these days...
- Traco Mathews received the President’s Award.
- Molly Busacca and Joe Hay received the newly named Evelyn R. Johnson Award (formerly the Club Service Award).
- Congratulations to the award recipients! Your service to the Club and our community is much appreciated. Thank you!
The program:
Shannon LeBare, Chair of The Hub of Bakersfield, was our presenter this week. The Hub of Bakersfield is a nonprofit organization committed to redefining and revitalizing Bakersfield's urban core, which includes downtown Bakersfield. Its mission is to make Bakersfield a better place to invest, live, work, and play. Shannon described the three focus areas of The Hub: People, Places, and Happenings. Those areas are described as follows on The Hub’s website.
People: Vibrant urban cores offer much more than a destination; they also offer an experience. These amazing experiences always have a group of people behind the scenes dreaming, building, and making it happen. The Hub of Bakersfield is here to recruit, develop, guide and support innovative people who want to build and create experiences in Bakersfield’s urban core.
Places: Bakersfield’s urban core is full of public spaces that make our community unique and interesting. These spaces contribute to the health, happiness, and wellbeing of the community. The Hub of Bakersfield’s Places committee works with public and private entities to enrich the character of our city by enhancing existing places and creating new ones.
Happenings: A thriving urban core attracts people from all stages of life and backgrounds, creating positive energy and activity that supports local businesses and fosters strong community spirit. How do you make that happen? Offer fun events and experiences that people enjoy. We are here to do that for you, your family, your friends, and the businesses in Bakersfield.
Overall, The Hub is focused on supporting and developing the people and projects building Bakersfield’s urban core. The organization provides a platform for people to get involved in the community. Hosting innovation labs and organizing community projects are just some ways The Hub inspires the people of Bakersfield to get involved. The Hub’s activities and projects include the painting of the mural under the Kentucky Bridge and. organizing Bakersfield Second Saturdays.
President Justin concluded the meeting by donating $50 to the Southern Sierra Conservancy one last time, thanking the Club for what was truly a wonderful year, and pleading for mercy during next week’s demotion. Don’t miss next week at the BMOA!
