Before Dave Whelden fell asleep during his "Getting Down To Business" segment, he shared the story that his grandpa told him he'd give him a job if he got an Engineer's degree. So he did, and now he runs the place, McKenny's Air.

Our speaker today was Lynn Brooks of the County of Kern. She gave an update on road construction, current projects, and how the quarantine has impacted transportation construction schedules. Director Craig Pope hovered in the background and chimed in when appropriate.
The Kern County Public Works Department is responsible for the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of roads, bridges, traffic signals, sanitary landfills, recycling centers, wastewater treatment plants, public transit centers, and other publicly-owned facilities.
The department provides public services including road permit inspection, building permit inspection, building plan check, code compliance, engineering and surveying review of proposed land development, solid waste disposal, hazardous waste disposal, wastewater treatment, public transportation, and community outreach.
Some facts I have transcribed from some slides I screen captured:
Walk Kern is a project KCPW oversees. They have 64 pedestrian and bicycle projects since 2007 at a cost of $52,898,574 dollars.
Solid Waste Department oversees 7 landfills, 7 transfer stations, and 3 special waste facilities that serves a population of 886,000. Interesting fact, average attendance (not including trash haulers) is 300 - 400 people. During the quarantine, it swelled to 1,200 to 1,500 a day!
Retrofitting infrastructure, like sidewalks, is 2 to 3 times the cost of new development, because utilities need to be relocated, owner property improvements need to be performed and drainage infrastructure needs to be improved or modified. Curb and sidewalk run about $1 million per mile. Paving dirt roads is about the same, $1 million per mile.
Challenges the KCPW department face include; pedestrian safety, drainage, curb and gutter, and sidewalk improvements., street widening, adding street lights, and adding or changing road lanes.
Gas taxes amount to about $18 million dollars and is used to maintain 3,300 miles of county roads.
Road maintenance costs: giving your street a minor makeover- about $50K per mile, heavier repair like fixing potholes and such, about $200K per mile, major reconstruction is about $1 million per mile.
