Program:
Today’s program was a very informative and eye-opening discussion about Black Infant and Maternal Health. Presenters were Anastasia Lester of First 5, and Chrystal Sheppard and Brynn Carrigan of Kern County Public Health Services.
Disparities in healthcare are an important topic and gaining attention. The data is stunning. Even when variables such as education and socio-economic status are controlled, Black women are four times more likely to die in childbirth or the post-partum period. More than a third of infant deaths, as well as life-long health, cognitive, academic, and earning potential issues and outcomes, are related to being born too soon.
This problem has been acknowledged in congress, with HR 1318 attempting “to eliminate disparities in maternal health outcomes for pregnancy-related and pregnancy-associated deaths, to identify solutions to improve health care quality and health outcomes for mothers…”
In Kern County, there is a newly formed workgroup across industries that is focusing on this issue. And First 5 Kern, focusing on health and wellness during the first five years, as well as Kern County Public Health are striving to gain recognition and solutions to this heartbreaking reality.
