The Guild House Restaurant / Renee Kinzell and Erin Lunn
The Child Guidance Guild was founded in 1958 by a group of community volunteers dedicated to raising funds in support of the Henrietta Weill Memorial Child Guidance Clinic, a private non-profit mental health agency for children and families in Kern County since 1946, providing a myriad of services to families in need: dual diagnosis substance abuse services; outpatient services; psychiatric evaluations and medication support services; and community-based services.
The Guild House is also a non-profit, operated for 62 years by an all-volunteer staff, currently numbering about 200. All proceeds, including tips, go to Henrietta Weill, about $2,200,000 to date. “We work because we care – supporting Kern families!”
The Guild House is located at 18th and F Streets in the historic Barlow House, built in 1909 and purchased by the Guild in 1975. It has recently gone through major a renovation and restoration. The restaurant serves gourmet meals from 11:30 – 1:30 Monday through Friday, and can accommodate individuals or groups. They also can be reserved for special events such as weddings, showers, holiday parties.
The current critical need is a new stove / oven, about $20,000. The current one is 15 years old, and needs to be replaced before it quits. Planning ahead for ongoing major expenses such as heating units, carpet, tables and seating is a continuing effort.
Point of interest – Urner’s sold the first refrigerator in Kern County to the Barlow family.
