WEEKLY BULLETIN

Good News and announcements

  • Jason Cater turned 30, making about 95% of us feel really old.
  • Justin Leland was the stand in Sergeant at Arms.
  • Garro Ellis, wearing really cool cowboy boots, spoke about this year's Waterman grants. Looking to grant $40,000 for a capital project, and he's looking for nominations.
  • Shawn Shambaugh and his wife became grandparents.
  • Ben Stinson was to appear on the Richard Beene show on Kern Radio later that day speaking on the topic of Rotary. Or so we hoped.
  • Congratulations to Dave Plivelich for earing the Paul Harris Service Fellowship award and pin.
  • President Dave was feeling pretty special because Shannon Grove had a prearranged a live call to Dave’s cell phone while she was appearing on the Jazz McKay show.  That was until he was put on hold.  The silence in the room was deafening.  Finally Shannon picked up and bailed President Dave out of an awkward situation.

Program

Chad Tongo and Mary Barlow introduced the young people from the BHS Interact club. Amanda Frank from Rotary West and our own Mary Barlow oversee the club.

The BHS Interact club was all but shut down, with declining attendance, few opportunities and no Rotary connection. Students Jon Ragadini and Lily St. Laurent resurrected it through word of mouth. They now have 30+ students and are steadily growing. More opportunities for volunteering and leadership roles are also expanding.

The "new" Interact has four committees; Community Outreach, School Outreach, Fundraising and Publicity. Outreach consists of collaborating with other schools and connecting with Rotary.

Past projects include:
  • Walks around Bakersfield
  • Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra
  • Salvation Army
  • Maddie's Messages
Maddie's Messages is a local outreach program started by Madison Ridley which makes one of a kind blankets for cancer patients.

Upcoming projects include:
  • Fundraising for LoveWater, an international charity for wells and water filtration projects
  • Donation Drive
  • KCAS Bed-Making
  • And more!

Jon Ragadini and Lily St. Laurent will be attending this year's RYLA four day Rotary youth camp in Ojai.
