President Steve opened the meeting at 12:15 with a proclamation that today was “Men make dinner day” Maybe because he has been batching it while his wife is baby siting their new grandbaby.
Jason Cater led us in prayer, Jesus Lopez helped us salute the flag and Joe Hay was song meister with Grand Old Flag.
Mike Chertok had to brag about his Astros team then earned forgiveness by making a donation to the Waterman Foundation..
Program
Our speaker today was Rod Barnes. Rod became the eighth head men's basketball coach at CSUB on Mar. 30, 2011, and is in his seventh season at the helm of the Roadrunners in 2017-18. Over the last two seasons Barnes has posted a 49-19 record and was named 'Don Haskins Coach of the Year' in the Western Athletic Conference in 2016 and 2017. He was also named 'Hugh Durham Mid Major Coach of the Year' in 2017 by CollegeInsider.com.
Barnes has a 106-88 record in six complete seasons at CSUB, joining just two other head coaches in CSUB history to win at least 100 games with the program. His career record sits at 291-276 following the 2016-17 season.
Barnes came to Bakersfield off a stint at Georgia State (2007-11) where he added 44 wins to his coaching resume and helped rebuild a basketball program amidst academic, administrative and conference turmoil.
Rod gave an inspirational talk and credited his father, a sharecropper in Yazoo County Mississippi, for his life guidance. He offered some of the rules he lives by now: Make people better, Show up and work hard, Build a better place, Strongly together, Hire the right people.
His goal this year is the NCAA tournament final four. He encouraged everyone to buy tickets by calling Logan Belz at 661-654-2361.
