Unfulfilled Potential

Joe Coughlin, owner of Coconut Joe's, introduced the group to "Coconut College" and a lively and provocative presentation on his philosophy of life. Coughlin said there are only three bucket in life: Time, Stories and Stuff. He said stuff goes away but your stories live with you and the decisions you make will determine those stories. Time is your only currency.

Coughlin believes a person must run their life like a business: You, Inc. And within your business you must have departments. Finance which is where you invest your time; Maintenance which is your health and mind well-being; Quality control which determines your relationships; Planning where you find your purpose in life; Research and development which impacts everything. He said R&D is where people tend to farm out their thinking to other people via watching television, looking at their phones all the time, etc.; Marketing where we send messages to the world about how we are feeling; Purchasing which suffers because of the marketing where we try to look good for others and live in an endless cycle of earn and spend.

He also talked about the U.S. tendency to be a "no vacation nation" and how the television controls so much of what we do. He concluded with saying that you can't have a big life if you conform, revitalize your planning for all your departments, rethink purchasing and "the only thing you ever really own is your story."
