WEEKLY BULLETIN • JULY 27, 2023
Thanks to his week's correspondent:
Jean-Luc Slagle

Spoke Guest Editor Profile:

Jean-Luc Slagle is the owner and creative director of the central valley creative and production house: Scope Studios. He serves on the board of directors for The Hub of Bakersfield, and the marketing program committee for CASA of Kern County. When he’s not working, he can be found playing and recording music, attempting stoicism, or spending time with his family, which includes wife Haley, 18-month-old son Rylo, and Sheepedoodle Toulouse. (Not necessarily in that order)

Good News & Announcements:

Pat Collins is being awarded the John Brock Cummunity Award

Bill Lever announced that Jordan Kaufman’s wife was speaking at East Rotary about the “Daughters of the American Revolution”

Joy Hay was fined $400 by Sgt. At Arms Nik Boone (double Nik’s absent fine) for being absent on his second week as president.

Program:

Guests were treated to a less-than-orthodox second week of Joe Hay’s tenure. Marooned by weather or other acts of God, Joe was unable to attend/host due to a delayed flight. Instead, the meeting was hosted by Sgt. At Arms Nik Boone, who could barely see over the podium, announced recent Ford recalls.

Jean-Luc Slagle introduced us to Dylan Wilson, the Executive Director of the Edible Schoolyard of Kern County, who “provides a hands-on learning, sensory experience to students through garden and kitchen classrooms. Our goal is to help every child fall in love with fresh, seasonal produce.”

Dylan walked Rotarians through a live demonstration of a seasonal carrot salad, which the group seemed to enjoy aside from a zealous use of red pepper. As the collective nostrils of the group dilated, we learned about the expansion of The Edible School yards vision in Kern County, the positive impact on the lives and learning of children, and (thanks to Garro) the date of the next open-to-the-public produce sale.

Dylan handed out Edible Schoolyard Olive Oil in exchange for some trivia answers (recipients Vin T. Dang and others) and the meeting was adjourned.

The real star of the show was the spinning rotary wheel in the PowerPoint.

Karen Goh is all about healthy eating!
Bill Lever help dish up samples.
Full house again, only person that was a no-show was our new president.
Nik Boone, jack of all trades.
