President Jim's first day as president
It was Jim Damian's first day as Rotary president, and he didn't disappoint.
Although things started off a little weird and slow when he asked a crew from Alert Disaster Restoration to dismantle and sterilize the podium while we sort of watched, shortly thereafter, we sang the entire song Imagine, by John Lenon. Which was a bit excruciating. Nik Boone started a slow clap and Dave Morton waved his cell phone in the air.
So- if the new setup on the dais is any indication, it looks like it's going to be more of a "TV talk show" setup. Complete with a "Wheel of Fortune". Which Damian clammed up about when asked about it.
So- if Damian is "Johnny Carson", then his "Ed McMahon" is Bakersfield Rotary's FIRST female Seargent At Arms, Toni Harper.
Speaking of Rotary Female Firsts, Jennifer Jones was named the first female presidential nominee.
President Jim had a clever way of introducing his Board. He showed photos of when they were kids and had the audience guess who they were. The reward was a cool custom token that he cryptically said would be worth an ice cream at a later date.
Nik Boone won the first token, which I'm sure he lost before he got in his car.
Jim also handed out some well-deserved awards and pins to Justin Leland, and a presidential plaque, that someone forgot to order for past president Ken Beurmann.
It remains to be seen whether president Jim will wear the tuxedo for the next 50 or so weeks, but I certainly hope he has the steel rod removed if he does.
His first act as president is he canceled the last meeting in July. We are dark NEXT week on July 28th.
