Havana Nights, our ONLY fundraiser will be held on April 13, 2019 at the lovely Shambaugh Estate. Mark your calendars!!
Joe Hay shared a shameless plug for the Burke businesses, they sold over 6,000 tires last year, ranking #1 on the West Coast and top 10 in the Country. They will beat any competitor price by $1.00!! They want to be in the top 5 this year. Message is: If you need new tires, go to one of the Burke locations. Somehow Joe got away without a fine.
Nick Ortiz on the other hand, received a $50.00 fine for holding the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce Board Installation luncheon to a sold out, pack the house crowd at 7 Oaks BUT never once mentioned Rotary!
How’s Business?
Ken Beurmann shared that business at Terrio Physical Therapy, has been going really well. He stated that only 1% of their business is “gym” memberships and the other 99% of their revenue comes from the therapies they offer. Kurt Wingate (of Glinn & Giordano Physical Therapy), sitting at the same table as Ken, video recorded the entire interview and will be fact-checking Ken’s comments.
Jeff Gutierrez shared that his business at DeWalt Corp is also going very well. He is looking forward to a prosperous 2019 as many of his large contracts (such as SoCal Edison & SoCal Gas) are due to upgrade much of their equipment. Jeff also shared with us that Jeff Green has ruptured his Achilles tendon and is out of commission for a while.
Program:
Our guest speaker today was Carlos Baldovinos, Executive Director of the Mission at Kern County. Carlos has been in full time ministry since 1988. In 2009 he began to have a heart to reach the homeless and addicted, this led him to the Mission at Kern Count in 2010. Carlos is currently the Chairman of the Board for the Kern County Homeless Collaborative (KCHC). The Mission of the KCHC is to put an end to homelessness in Kern County through collaborative planning and action. Together they are committed to ending homelessness, the Members of the KCHC strive toward “housing first”. When people are housed first, basic needs are met faster, helping them live independently and minimize the costs to communities. There are 32 agencies in the Collaborative. Case management before and after housing helps to ensure greater stability and long-term success; and provides added incentives for landlord partnerships. Outreach efforts and events reach those in need of housing and homeless prevention. Networking opportunities, presentations, trainings, media, e-news briefs and social media provide resources to educate the community.
California has 134,000 homeless individuals which is equal to 25% of the Nations homeless. At last count, Kern County had 885 homeless which is a 9% increase year over year. Mayor Goh, as part of the Big 11 Mayors, was able to secure funding under the Homeless Emergency Aid Program (HEAP) which has helped to fund capital projects such as additional beds.
The Point in Time Count will occur on January 31st from 4:00 am – 8:00 am. This year there are 500 volunteers, the largest number ever. This is indicative of the increased awareness of this issue in our community.

The look on President Ray's face says it all after our rendition of America the Beautiful. Yikes!
Despite his 90 second infomercial on the Ford Dealership tire program, Joe Hay was not fined. It all became clear when I saw el presidenté pulling out of the parking lot, with what looked to be, very new rubber on his ride.
Despite his Howdy Doody looks, Ken Beurmann will cut you. Here, spouting inflated PT success stories right to the face of tablemate Kurt Wingate, president ofGlinn & Giordano Physical Therapy.
