Program
For 24 impactful years, 'Do the Math' has been a cornerstone of interactive educational television, broadcast live through the Kern Educational Television Network (KETN). This enduring program is consistently hosted by Mike Cushine, a devoted math teacher from Stockdale Elementary, airing twice weekly.
Each one-hour broadcast is meticulously designed to introduce students to innovative problem-solving techniques and vividly illustrate the real-world applications of mathematics. Through popular segments like 'Math in the Real World' and 'Math in the News,' the show effectively demonstrates that mathematical relevance extends far beyond the traditional classroom setting, connecting abstract concepts to everyday experiences. The program is also forward-thinking, integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Art (STEAM) into its curriculum, with segments such as 'The STEAM Yard Showdown' actively challenging students to apply their interdisciplinary knowledge.
Beyond his regular broadcasts, Mike Cushine brought an engaging game for the Rotarians to play, showcasing his ability to make learning collaborative and (kind of) enjoyable. In what was perhaps a memorable moment, Bill Lever wanted it on record that Mr. Cushine bears a distinct resemblance to a 'smart Howard Stern”!
