Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc. – Educational Scholarship Program
 
The Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc. (Foundation), annually provides thousands of dollars in scholarship giving to graduating students from the Atascadero Unified School District, and beginning in 2014, the Foundation received an endowment that allows a scholarship giving to a student from Morro Bay High School.  The scholarships that are offered are summarized below.

Rotary Club of Atascadero Renewable

HISTORY:  In 2011 the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc. established a renewable scholarship to promote the objects of Rotary which are to encourage and foster high ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve society.    
 
PURPOSE:  Assist graduates of Atascadero Unified School District in pursuing a degree in higher education.
 
 
Gordon Gearhart Renewable
$1500/year

HISTORY:  This scholarship was originally called the Rotary Renewable Scholarship and commenced in 1971 by the Rotary Club of Atascadero to promote he objects of Rotary which are to encourage and foster high ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve society.  In February 2011 the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc. re-named the original rotary renewable scholarships the "Rotary/Gordon Gearhart Renewable Scholarship".  This was in recognition of the significant financial contribution that Gordon Gearhart had made to the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc.  Mr. Gearhart made this contribution many years ago without any desire to get special recognition for the contribution.  He was a member of the Rotary Club of Atascadero from 1984 until his death in 2014.
 
PURPOSE:  Assist graduates of Atascadero Unified School District in pursuing a degree in higher education.
 
Todd Everett

HISTORY:  The Todd B. Everett memorial scholarship was established in 2013 by the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc., after Todd’s untimely death from cancer.  His family and friends provided foundation contributions for the recognition to honor Mr. Everett through a scholarship to a local student continue their education that shared one or more of Mr. Everett’s passions.  
Mr. Everett was born in Santa Margarita in 1968. He attended Santa Margarita Elementary School and Atascadero Junior High School where he discovered his love for distance running.  At Atascadero High School, he was a Varsity Cross Country runner all four years.  He was a member of the 1985 CIF Southern Section Championship team and the 1984 CIF Southern Section runner up team.  Mr. Everett graduated from Atascadero High School in 1986, and he continued his cross country running at Cuesta College and Cal Poly University.  
He graduated in 1992 from Cal Poly with a Graphic Communications degree.  He worked at several large printing companies, working in production, estimating, customer service and sales.  His last position was in sales at Vintage 99, a wine and beverage label printing company.  Todd continued his love of running after college as a member of local running clubs and he ran one-half and full marathons with Team in Training to raise funds for cancer research.
 
PURPOSE:  Special consideration for students pursuing a career in graphic arts, printing, business or related field.  Special consideration to students that ran cross-country or distance running in school.
 
 
Ganpule Family Foundation

HISTORY:  Dr. Ganpule is a local Oncologist residing near Atascadero since 1991.  Dr. Ganpule desired to help students graduating from Atascadero School District who might be seeking a career in medicine.  In 2004 the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc., established the Rotary/Ganpule Scholarship in recognition of a significant contribution to the foundation from the Ganpule Family Foundation.  
 
PURPOSE:  Scholarship for a student who will be attending a college or university with the intention of a career in the medical field.
 
 
Don Hanauer

HISTORY:  Don was a member of the Rotary Club of Atascadero from 1985 until his death in 2001.  Don was a member of the Atascadero business community after retirement as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.  For many years he edited an economic newsletter for Santa Lucia Bank in Atascadero.  In 2004 the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc., established the Rotary/Don Hanauer Scholarship in recognition of his service and a significant contribution to the foundation from his family.  
 
PURPOSE:  As per the desires of Mr. Hanauer’s family, the scholarship should go to a student intending to pursue the study of business at a college or university, if possible. 
 
 
Clark Herman

HISTORY: Clark Herman was a member of the Rotary Club of Atascadero from 1974-1999.  He had a great interest in forestry, animals, and horticulture and had received national awards for his work in horticulture during his career. The Rotary/Clark Herman scholarship was established in the memory of Clark by the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc.
 
PURPOSE:  Scholarship is for "students planning a career in environmental science/engineering, conservation and natural resources management, or landscape, horticulture, or a closely related field". 
 
 
JoAnne Main

HISTORY:  Joanne Main was a member of the Rotary Club of Atascadero from 2000 until her death in 2011.  She was the Club President in Rotary Year 2007/08 and established the Club's Leadership and Ethics Conference in 2002 (now known as the “Take the Lead” conference).  Upon her death in 2011 she was the Chief Executive Officer of the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce.  In 2011 the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc., established the Rotary/Joanne Main Scholarship in recognition of her many achievements and a significant contribution to the foundation from family and friends.  The Club undertook a campaign for contributions to this scholarship.
 
PURPOSE:    Assist graduates of Atascadero Unified School District in pursuing a degree in higher education.
 
 
Ted McCarty

HISTORY:  Ted McCarty was a member of the Rotary Club of Atascadero from 1975 until his death in 2001.  He was a teacher and was then the Assistant Superintendent of Schools at Atascadero Unified School District until his retirement.  In 2004 the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc., established the Rotary/Ted McCarty Scholarship in recognition Mr. McCarthy’s service and a significant contribution to the foundation from his family.  
 
PURPOSE:  As per the desires of Mr. McCarthy’s family, the scholarship should go to a student intending to pursue the study of education and of becoming a teacher, if possible.
 
 
Rotary Team Player Award (two) 1.  $1500

HISTORY:  In 2002 the Rotary Club of Atascadero made a contribution to the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc., with the condition that some of that contribution be granted directly in the next year for a scholarship.  The foundation created two scholarships for this purpose named the "Rotary Team Player Award" for the outstanding male and female athlete with the selection to be made by coaches and the awards to be presented at the Athletic banquet.  The annual scholarships were to continue for 4 years.  In 2006 the foundation changed the scholarship name to Rotary/Woody Miller Team Player Award (male and female).  In 2007 the foundation made the "Woody Miller" scholarships permanent scholarships".  In 2015, the scholarship was renamed the Rotary Team Player Award.
 
PURPOSE:  To recognize a male and a female athlete who has demonstrated a high level of personal ethical and leadership traits through day to day actions.  The selection was originally to be made by coaches, and has transitioned to be consistent with the current application process administered by the Atascadero School District.  
 
QUALIFICATIONS:  The applicant must have been on one or more Varsity Athletic teams.  This award is presented to a school athlete who best represents the ideals of Rotary, "Service above Self", fairness, high ethical standards, and help build good will among teammates.  Also, a student athlete who is at practice and games every day,  with a great attitude and helps lift up and encourage the other players even though he/she might not see much playing time.  We want to honor the student athlete who shows fairness and ethics in all that they do.
 
 
Toni Naretto Memorial

HISTORY:  Toni Naretto was a teacher at Atascadero High School.  Upon her death, her family desired to start a scholarship in her name.  The Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc., established the "Rotary/Toni Naretto Scholarship" in recognition of a significant contribution to the foundation from Ms. Naretto’s family and friends.  
 
PURPOSE:  Assist graduates of Atascadero Unified School District in pursuing a degree in higher education.
 
 
G. Howard Rasmussen

HISTORY:  Howard Rasmussen was a local academic administrator.  Upon his death, his wife desired to establish a scholarship to specifically benefit students who would be attending Cuesta College.  In 2002 the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc., established the "Rotary/Rasmussen Family Scholarship" in recognition of a contribution to the foundation from the Rasmussen Family.  
 
PURPOSE:   Scholarship to go "...to a student planning to attend Cuesta College...."

HISTORY:  Bertha Shultz died June 2013, and named the Rotary Club of Atascadero Foundation, Inc., in her will and bequest $250,000 to the foundation with conditions of scholarship and grant giving within the Atascadero Unified School District.  In November of 2013 the Foundation’s Board of Directors accepted the bequest and approved a resolution to fulfill the desires of Bertha Shultz.  
 
PURPOSE:  Vocation in the trade (practical skills) career field (e.g., nursing, paramedics, medical assistants, dental assistants, physical rehabilitation, automotive repair, construction, vocational trades).
