This Week's Meeting

Tracy Rubstello, Director of Development for The Bridge Receiving Center, will be giving a presentation about the organization that helps children entering the foster care system navigate the often sudden upheaval in their lives. With a series shortage of licensed foster homes available to these children, The Bridge Receiving Center is a therapeutic camp-like place where children, ages six and older, can stay for up to 30 days while preparing for placement in a foster home. As we will learn, the camp is right in our own back yard.

Snohomish Health District

Jeff Ketchel, Administrator, Snohomish Health District addresses our Club on Friday, January 25th. Jeff loves science and environmental health. Public health is a cooperative effort and he mentioned Rotary's role in the plan to eradicate polio. Safe food and water is absolutely crucial. This is the 60th anniversary of the Snohomish Health District. Healthy housing was an early part of his job. Antibiotics important for animals. No new antibiotics are in the research pipeline. The car tab initiative of a number of years ago in eventually harmed the agency and trimmed their staff from 230 to 130 employees.

During his presentation he sited the work of John Snow-1850 London and the SoHo are of London issue where a water pump created an epidemic which involved a cholera outbreak. The water pump was connected to the sewage line. Jeff talked about the agency's work with the opioid crisis. Working with the County and the Sheriff's Department. There are 10,000 people addicted to opioids in Snohomish County with another 80,000 using opioids in some way. Working with hospitals on public awareness and distributing information is important activity to combat opioid use and addiction. Alerting doctors to the problem as well.

Arsenal Youth Baseball Club

Barry Torgesen makes a presentation to our club asking for financial support of the new Arsenal Youth Baseball Club. The team was established after a successful run in last year's District Little League All-Star tournament. At their first Board meeting, the discussion centered on "why they are doing this?" To teach our boys the game of baseball and important lessons of life through the game of baseball.

The team provides an affordable platform for their boys to compete on the baseball diamond. The other important element is to use the sport of baseball as a vehicle to go out and make an impact on the community. Their community service activities include 100 hours working at the Lake Stevens Garden which generated over 27,000 lbs of food and at Hungry Hearts.

The Club Board held an emergency meeting following our regular meeting voting to financially support the Arsenal Baseball Club. Rotary patches will be on the team's jerseys.

Family Center Moving Day

Monday was moving day for the Lake Stevens Family Center. Helping with the move were Club members (l) to (r) Jim Haugen, Scott Smith, James Monroe,Chris Vallo, John Dyer, Jo Olson and Gary O'Rielly. The Lake Stevens Family Center is moving from their home of 20 years to temporary quarters at the Lundeen Park Visitor Information Center.

Troop 88 Starts This Week

We are proud to announce that Troop 88 formally starts February 1st! For their very first activity the Scouts will be participating in a Winter Camp experience at Camp Shepard which is located adjacent to Mt. Rainier. The Camp starts on the 1st! The Troop is for girls ages 11 through 17. Girls who are 10 and involved in Cub Scouts can join the Troop before their eleventh birthday provided they meet a couple of requirements. The Scouting program for girls will be just like the Scouting program for boys. We are pleased to partner with Scouts BSA and their mission of "Preparing young people to make moral and ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in the them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law."

The Scoutmaster is Eagle Scout Trevor Crockett, the Committee Chair is Kristin Wells and the Chartered Organization Representative is Chris Vallo. All three have been involved in Scouting for many years. We will get a chance to meet Trevor and Kristin at an upcoming meeting. And, soon we will have a visit from the girls!

Our regular Rotary Club Meetings are at the Lake Stevens School District Educational Service Center lower level Community Room located at 12309 22nd St NE. We start at 7:30 am. There is a robust continental breakfast available beforehand. Visitors are always welcome.
