This year’s Rotary International theme is “Rotary Connects the World.” That feels more challenging as we navigate the current pandemic. Our weekly in-person meetings have been cancelled, the District Conference cancelled, and even the International Convention cancelled. So that’s the end of being connected, right?

Nope. In true Rotarian style it means coming up with clever and ingenious ideas on how to stay connected. I was so impressed with how many joined in on our weekly meeting by Zoom last Friday. It was so good to see your faces and to hear your voices. I have seen online birthday parties, and drive by parade celebrations. There is a group of people who watched the same movie in their homes and then got together by Zoom to discuss. Thank you Debe Franz for that idea. Lots of people have been sharing on Facebook showing how they are keeping busy.

My encouragement to you this week is to find ways to connect. Do the little things that mean so much to others. Leave a note of encouragement in your mailbox for your mail carrier. Look the cashier at the grocery store in the eye and tell them how much you appreciate them for being there for you. Put a light in your window or a string of lights outside as a message to our first responders that we are thinking of them. And as you come up with your own ideas, please share them with the rest of us.

For the foreseeable future we will be meeting online. The meetings will start at 7:30. You will be able to join the meetings starting at 7:25. We are using the Zoom online meeting platform. Click this link to join the meeting. Guests are always welcome.

The Board will be having an online meeting this week. A link to join the meeting was sent in a separate email to members. As always, every member is encourage to attend Board Meetings.

Just What the Doctor Ordered!

Our meeting this morning was just what the doctor ordered! So great to SEE👀 everyone, do a little Club business and start to plan how we can best support the Lake Stevens community in the coming months.Thanks Reshal.

Nice to see so many connect into Zoom or on the phone to our virtual Rotary Club Meeting this morning. Either by internet or by phone, hearing what's going on with each of us was a great way to connect and as Reshal pointed out, "JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED." Dave Duskin, Assistant Governor, Area J, and Bob Knight, formerly of Snohomish and now living in Florida, joined in.

Several projects underway by crafts persons like Nanci Johnson and President Laurie making surgical mask for friends and those in need or dropping them off at the local Food Bank. I know Tracy was doing lots of quilting for family and friends, Dave Duskin announced that are Area in District 5050 can use a USD$5,000 matching grant for COVID-19 pandemic relief projects. Many ideas such as purchasing large quantities of surgical mask and protective wear for First Responders, Police, and the medical profession plus hospitals was at the top of the conversation.

Rotary Skate Park: The County and City will be developing plaques to install at the Rotary Skate Park and has asked our Club to develop one as well since we were the catalyst for getting the Skateboard Park project going some 15+ years ago and never, ever giving up on the idea.

Corks and Kegs sponsors have all agreed to be supporters of the new date in September. We have almost met our goal of $10,000 even exceeding last years sponsorship contributions.

It was so good to hear what's going on in everyone's daily lives along with their stay-at-home projects. Seven new chickens being raised and watched over by Maia Pinkelman caught DJ and Laurie's attention. A new puppy in the life of the O'Brien family certainly added to the excitement.

There was a big shout out to Kevin, Ron and John for the work being done by our First Responders, Police as well as the teachers who are learning new ways of teaching from their homes as well as School District staff and so many more. A sad note for Chris V and his family who lost his son this past week at such an early stage in his adult life. This was not related to the pandemic. All of us are keeping his family in our thoughts and prayers.

An Irish Blessing to our Rotary family: May your purse always hold a coin or two; may the sun always shine on your window pane; May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain; May the hand of a friend always be near you and May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you on.

A message from Mayor Brett Gailey

The Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce received the following email from Lake Stevens Mayor Bret Gailey on Tuesday morning. He asked that we pass it along to the business community: I asked Matt for permission to repeat the message on our website as well. The message from the Mayor is listed below.

I wanted to thank the businesses of Lake Stevens for their work in these difficult days. It is wonderful to see many of our great restaurants still working and providing a service to our citizens. The grocery stores are maintaining orderly distribution of food to concerned patrons. Gas stations providing fuel for those essential workers keeping our community safe and healthy.

I want you to know I am working as diligently as possible within the Governors guidelines to keep business open and providing services. As we continue on what is truly a different operating environment for all of us my wishes are for joint effort in making sure the economy of our city stabilizes and is able to quickly rebound. Please feel free to reach out to me with ideas on what we can do better within city government to assist in your business efforts.

Challenging Times

These are certainly challenging times with the COVID-19 pandemic occurring around the world and in our own community. The recent decision to cancel K-12 schools in the state through April 24th along with many civic institutions has certainly distorted our daily social fabric unlike anything in our lifetimes. With that in mind and the ever widening disruption in our daily routines, the Rotary Club of Lake Stevens has decided out of an abundance of caution to cancel our weekly Friday morning meetings through April 24th. The shutdown of our meetings could be longer if there isn't a significant change in the COVID-19 pandemic here in Washington State.

And, just as importantly, our Corks and Kegs Annual fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, April 18th has been postponed until Saturday, September 26th. Those who have already purchased tickets can hold on to them since we are simply postponing our event. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact someone from our Club for more clarification etc.

Maintaining our distance from one another and doing the simple thinks to protect one another is essential at this time. No hugs, no handshakes and people maintaining a comfortable distance from one another is the safest practice at this time. In the meantime, Club members can be in contact with one another through our new Facebook social page, calling one another to see how they are doing or a simple text will send the same message.....is certainly an example to one other that you and I care about each and everyone of our members. Stay tuned. More to come as we continue to monitor the progress of defeating this virus.

2020 Scholarship Applications

Our 2020 Academic and Vocational Scholarship Applications are now available for graduating high seniors who plan to pursue further education at a college, university or vocational school. The application can be completed on your computer. Print it out, sign it, then send it along with the required documents to the email at the bottom of the application page (lmorehouse@sherwoodcs.org).

There are specific requirements for each and the deadline for both is April 10, 2020. The Committee is looking into alternative ways to accept applications. Please stay tuned for updated information.

Corks & Kegs Hawaiian Style

Interact is a service club for youth ages 14-18. The name is a combination of the words international and action. We join Clubs in over 120 countries around the world. The global youth network is dedicated to community and international service. Every Interact Club project, great or small, has a lasting impact on society worldwide.
