Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)
Our guest speaker on Friday, September 4th, via ZOOM was John Van Dalen, Ombudsman for the National Guard Employer Support Services or Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).  Before John began talking about the importance of the ESGR program, Mayor Brett Gailey spoke well of the organization because they assisted him when he was on deployment to Iraq. John was a Senior Master Sergeant before he retired.

ESGR is a U. S. Department of Defense program which was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between the Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from a employee's military commitment.
The program was established in 1972 with the passage of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA).  John shared a five minute video that described the program and honored the members and employers who help with the program.

John lives in Everett and is responsible for the region composed of Snohomish, Island, Skagit and Whatcom Counties.  In his spare time, John is a Amateur Radio Operator and has worked with Loren Hole over the years. John commented that there is a process in place alerting a military member to make his or her employer know that they are leaving for military service. The Act does not cover independent contractors.
