This week we are meeting at The Buzz Inn. Get caught up on Club activities.

Members: Keep working on getting sponsors for this year's Cork & Kegs. We want to secure them so they can be added to the tickets and other promotional materials.

Thank you to those that have signed up to sponsor the weekly breakfast. Please look ahead to late March and beyond to sign up for a meeting. Partnering with another member can help. Contact Club Services Chair Jim Haugen for more information.

At the end of your bulletin is a list of commitments, committees and activities that you are involved in through the Club and/or District. Make sure you review that. Especially with the fundraiser coming up in April.

Highland Elementary School Request

One of the guest's at last Friday's meeting was Shanna Myers, Highland Elementary School PTA Treasurer, who shared information about the PTA raising funds to expand the playground at the school to be more inclusive for children of all abilities. Current equipment is very inadequate and many of the students cannot use the equipment because of the large number of students at the school. The estimate to upgrade the all inclusive equipment is $57,155.97. Shanna has approached the Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce and is looking for other sources of funding for the project. Recently, Highland Elementary School became the home base for northern Snohomish County's Structured Learning Center for Early Childhood Special Education at the start of the 2018-19 school year. This is the reason for the fundraiser by the PTA.

Classification Talk - Kristin Odeggard

Kristin Odeggard talked about her background, family, education and teaching Spanish at Lake Stevens High School. Besides discussing her background, Kristin gave an overview of the current Interact Club in her role as Advisor to the Club. The Interact team meets each Wednesday in Room 104 at the High School. So far this year, the Interact Club has logged over 428 volunteer hours encompassing helping teachers clean whiteboards, sorting, arranging flowers, filing and packing and unpacking as teachers move into new classrooms as the remodeling of the high school continues. The Interact Club has approximately 22-29 members.

The author (Gary O'Rielly) is all desked out with Mardi Gras beads as the season is upon us. After 16 years in Louisiana, the annual Mardi Gras has become a major celebration of the O'Rielly family. Shortly, as in the past ten years, King Cakes will arrive from two Louisiana friends.

Although my talk centered on my background, varied career and the number of moves around the United States as each of my careers expanded from one to another. Louisiana was special. So a bit about the history of Mardi Gras and the King Cake Tradition below.

An observer once said that New Orleanians are either having a party, recuperating from a party or planning a party. The biggest and best party of all and the city's most famous celebration is Mardi Gras, the greatest free show on earth. Mardi Gras in New Orleans dates back to 1837 when the first street parade took place. The celebration throughout New Orleans and parts of Louisiana covers more than 100 private masked balls.

One of the most popular customs is still the baking of a special cake in honor of the three kings, referred to as the King Cake. Over time, traditions evolved: the person who receives the doll baked inside of the King Cake continues the festivities by hosting the next King Cake party. King Cakes were originally a simple ring of dough with little decorations. Several bakeries have developed their own special recipes as a signature item to become "the King of King Cakes" made from rich Danish dough, baked and covered with a poured sugar topping and decorated with the traditional Mardi Gras colored sugars. Purple, representing Justice; Green representing Faith; and Gold representing Power. Hundreds of thousands of King Cakes are consumed at parties every year, making the King Cake another fine Louisiana tradition.,

This week only we are meeting at The Buzz Inn, 1801 Main St in downtown Lake Stevens. Our regular Rotary Club Meetings are at the Lake Stevens School District Educational Service Center lower level Community Room located at 12309 22nd St NE. We start at 7:30 am. There is a robust continental breakfast available beforehand. Visitors are always welcome.
