Lake Stevens' spectacular summer celebration is upon us! Aquafest is a premier festival in the greater Puget Sound region. And we are right in the middle of it all! From the Food Booth to the Grand Parade to the Duck Dash, this is a great way to promote our message of Service Above Self.
Our regular Friday morning meeting will be at The Buzz Inn on Main Street. Right after, we will be starting to set up our Booth. This weekend is an All Hands on Deck event. See you there!

At our Meeting July 22nd we honored Hayden Ploeger with a Paul Harris Award for his efforts in starting our successful Interact Club at LSHS. A big thank you also goes out to our Interact advisory committee - Jim Haugen, Gary O'Rielly, Reshal Ploeger, Kristin Odegaard (Staff Advisor) and James Monroe (not pictured).
During District Governor Scott Dudley's Installation Banquet at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club on July 16th, outgoing District Governor Bill Robson presented a Gold Presidential Citations award to Bill Demeroutis. The Presidential Citation was earned during Bill's term 2015-16. The Presidential Citation award is based on a club achieving goals that strengthen Rotary and our Club. Activities include growing membership, developing sustainable service projects, giving to the Rotary Foundation and building awareness of Rotary in our community. There are three categories, Gold, Silver and Bronze. We achieve an incredible Gold status, thanks to Bill and his leadership.
Our program on July 15th was Representative Mark Harmsworth (R-44) talking about the outcome of the 2016 Washington State Legislative session. During the course of the nickname. His goal was to reduce the cost of traveling the express toll lanes during the non-busy periods in the evening and on weekends. Jesse Jones, Channel 7, likes Representative Harmsworth because of his work on the I-405 express toll lane controversy.
He spoke about the McCleary Decision and the fact that there is no silver bullet. The next session will likely include more work on the McCleary Decision and a Transportation package. The US Hwy 2 Trestle is going to be a major project according to Harmsworth. Questions and answers followed his presentation.
Our program this past week was Lance Morehouse, Executive Director of Sherwood Community Services accompanied by Anna Gibson, Nick Holz and Andrew Urie. Lance came to Sherwood Community Services in 2013 with 15 years of non-profit experience specifically with people with developmental disabilities and their families.
Sherwood Community Services is over 60 years old and provides innovative, inclusive services to children and adults with disabilities in their communities across the lifespan from birth to retirement.
Anna Gibson, Director of Children's Services, joined Sherwood in 2006 as a Family Resource Coordinator/Educator. Served over 400 students last year. Early prevention provider. She travels to the homes in Stanwood/Camano Island and throughout Snohomish County. She works with children from birth to 3 years old. Full evaluations are provided upon request.
Nick Holz, Vopcational Services Program Manager, has been with Sherwood since 2014. Prior to Sherwood, Nick was the Kansas Association of People Supporting Employment First as the Chapter President. Works with adults with special needs who are looking for jobs. His role is to help these individuals learn how to be productive workers and find a community job. Individuals are taught to learn about transportation needs, dress codes, interviewing skills and more.
Andrew Urie, Independent Living Coordinator, has been with Sherwood since 2007 as a Job Placement specialist in Vocational Services. In 2012, Andrew became the TechSTEP Services Coordinator. His specialty is working with devices that help communicate with people and more. Families can use Sherwood devices to learn how to use them before spending money on these devices.
Our own Cindy Mahan recommended that all of our members sign up for the weekly newsletter. Currently the organization is working on a point of transition with the development of a new five year plan. Sherwood Community Services is special and a complement to our city. Thanks for all of your work with special needs individuals both children and adults as well as working with their families. Job well done.
