Hannah joined us to talk about The American Cancer Society's Making Strides Walk Against Breast Cancer on October 27th. The American Cancer Society is currently funding 162 grants related to breast cancer totaling more than $91 million dollars. Breast cancer research goes for such areas as Hope Lodge with nearly 452,000 nights of free lodging; Road to Recovery and other transportation programs provided over 340,000 rides to treatment; a 24/7 cancer helpline has involved more than 20 million calls, chats and emails and Patient Navigators has helped more than 40,000 patients.

 

Making Strides of Snohomish County involves a 5k walk on Saturday, October 27th.  Registration at 9 am and the walk begins at 10 am. Harness the Power of Purple with real men wearing purple including our own Kevin O'Brien and Mayor John Spencer leading the list of the 10 candidates that the Making Strides of Snohomish County group is looking for this year. So far, 7-8 have signed on for the event. Team sign ups are encouraged and Laurie Westover, President-Elect is going to organize a team including this reporter. Last year, they had well over 700 participants and this year the goal is 1,000.

 

Hannah is the Community Development Manager for the American Cancer Society. She joined the society in 2015 and manages the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk along with Real Men Wear Purple and the Night of Hope Gala which is the premier fundraising event for the American Cancer Society in Snohomish County. Hannah earned her degree in Business Administration and Non-Profits from the University of Northern Colorado.

 

Soon after interning for the society, Hannah's father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and her mom with skin cancer. Both parents are alive today and Hannah credits the American Cancer Society and the research they have done to saving both of her parents.
