Lake Stevens Food Bank Operations and New Building Update

Stephanie Sherry, Director and Chris Jacobson, Board Member gave an update on the Food Bank operations and the New Building status. The Food Bank has more than doubled their service from 16,000 to 28,000 people this year. They are serving the needs of the community from four locations and all are Drive Through operations.

Tuesday from 5:30pm-6:30pm drive through is at the Assemblies of God Church
Wednesday from 3:00pm-5:00pm at the Calvary Chapel Church
Thursday from 1:30pm-6:00pm at Ebenezer Lutheran Church
Saturday from 10am to 2pm at the Lake Church

A brief video showing Anne Anderson, former Director of the Food Bank, was part of the program. Business is booming at these sites. Flow of traffic is important. Sherwood Community Services assist with deliveries to over 60 families on Wednesday.

All of the local schools and school district facilities have conducted Food Drives for the Lake Stevens Food Bank. Jim Scott, designed a menu system to customize a box for each family. The biggest challenge is needing the new building. Chris Jacobson, our own Club member, commented on the amazing work being done by Stephanie and Georgia as well as all of the volunteers. The community has really pulled together. They are reaching people of all financial spheres.

The Lake Stevens Food Bank has the land and some money from the State. The new building will be located at 8021 20th Street SE. The building will have its name ID when the building is done. The money from the state requires prevailing wages on all city and state projects including the Food Bank. Procrastination helped when the city decided to widen 20th Street. The Lake Stevens 20th Street improvements helped slow the project saving the cost of the new building over $200,000 by the City putting in the water pipes and retention pond.

Phase One: This phase has been approved which involves the final design of the inside of the Food Bank building. Included in this phase is the set up of the warehouse; consolidation of services to one point of operation with Stephanie and Georgia working out of one place. The building has to be strategically planned for the future as well. The goal is to break ground in the spring and be up and running before Thanksgiving.

Capital Campaign will begin soon. Monies raised will allow the Food Bank to build and furnish a new facility with sufficient space, adequate refrigeration and equipment and a safer and more efficient service environment. The Food Bank has a gifted grant writer who is focusing on the campaign. Currently writing a grant for $1 million dollars. The capital campaign will be tiered out. Name of contributors will be listed on a wall in the new building listing the different levels of financial support.

Lake Stevens Rotary Foundation Update

Below is a recap of the Club's Foundation report at our meeting on December 18th via Zoom.

The Rotary Foundation (RI)

Club dues invoices will be emailed for the last six months of this Rotary year. Included with this invoice is a request to add an additional $50 to your payment to the Rotary Foundation. Please consider making this payment to add to your Foundation giving and reach our Club Foundation giving goals.

Lake Stevens Rotary Charitable Foundation (Club)

The LSRCF Board recently approved payments from the Loren Hole Endowment. As outlined in the rules of the Loren Hole Endowment, the interest raised by the Endowment from the previous calendar year is available to be spent on Community projects the following year. 2019 was a good year in the market with available funds to be used of $13,575.98. The Board has approved payments to the following organizations:

Highland Elementary School playground $4,000

This added to the $3,600 raised at our Corks & Kegs event with an additional District Grant of $7,250 will provide a total of $14,850.

Lake Stevens Education Foundation $2,500 to help support the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

Lake Stevens Senior Center $4,000

Hungry Hearts $2,000

Scouts $1,000 This amount will be matched by the Nysether Foundation for a total contribution of $2,000.

Total Lake Stevens Charitable Foundation payments of $13,500. Thank you for your contributions and the many goods things our Club does to support this community.
