Laurie is a foster grandma of three foster children, now adopted and one bio-grandchild. Her efforts target families who have a heart for kids that are in need of stability during a trying time of uncertainty. Before starting her talk, she recognized Club member Joyce Bell for starting the Lake Stevens Family Center. Many of the children that have been removed from their home for a variety of reasons, are in need of a stable home environment. Ages of these children are from 0-21. Some have experienced multiple foster care placements and they just need a break with a loving and caring family experience.

 

FamilyBuilders wants foster parents who live in King and Snohomish County; are a least 21 years old; are able to work in collaboration with a team including social workers, teachers and birth families; are dedicated to working towards safety and permanent placement for a child and can commit to respite, short term, long term or adoptive placement for a child. FamilyBuilders works with Refugees Northwest as well. When they come across the border, it is important to find a sponsor.

 

If a foster child does not find a home, they are less likely to go to college. When a foster child turns 18, they are kicked out of a foster home. Attempts are being made to have a legislator proposed legislation raising the age to 21. In many cases, 51% of foster kids reunite with their parents which is really helpful. Many of the agencies that involved in the process are now collaborating with one another. The opioid crisis has prompted more children going into foster care.
