Service Above Self. That is the Rotary motto. What does it mean today as we face this pandemic?

Many of our lives have been put on hold during March and we are looking at more weeks to come. Others have been on overdrive, thank you front line people. So, we may feel that Rotary is on a back burner. We all miss our social time Friday mornings and our committee meetings (with wine). It is easy to list the things we can’t do. Let’s take some time to think of what we can do to support each other and our community.

Number one – social distancing and washing your hands! Let’s kick this virus!
Call or e-mail family, friends, neighbors… Isolation can be very hard on people. Having someone to talk to can really help. Plus, you may learn they need groceries, pharmacy pick-up, or something else where you can help.
If your health allows, see if you can volunteer at the food bank. Contact number (425) 334-3430
Do you have a special talent you could share via YouTube or in real time on Zoom? Singing, playing an instrument, instruction on tying knots, how to bake bread…You get the idea. Share your talent.
Make cards or write letters of encouragement to our front line workers. Let them know how much we appreciate them.
Going for a walk? Take a garbage bag and do a little road clean-up.
Help with our scholarship program. Let Lance know if you can assist here.

I’m sure there are lots of other ideas. Send those ideas to the Club or me and then I will pass them on.

Stop waiting for this to be over. It’s time to get to work.

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION!

One more thing – financially supporting those organizations that are helping our community. Many organizations like ours had to either cancel or postpone their fundraisers. A couple I am aware of -

Sherwood was one of those organizations that wasn’t able to hold their major fundraiser. Consider checking them out and making a donation.

I spoke to Mike at the Lake Stevens Boys and Girls Club. They have a fundraiser to support the work they are doing. Here is the information he provided.

Thank you so much for the call today to check on us. I have included the link below to our Campaign For Kids fundraiser that we are currently running till the end of May. Our club is currently offering childcare for kids of First Responders at no charge to them until this virus takes a hike. Any help we can get from the Rotary Club to help us recoup some of these costs would be greatly appreciated.

Challenging Times

These are certainly challenging times with the COVID-19 pandemic occurring around the world and in our own community. The recent decision to cancel K-12 schools in the state through April 24th along with many civic institutions has certainly distorted our daily social fabric unlike anything in our lifetimes. With that in mind and the ever widening disruption in our daily routines, the Rotary Club of Lake Stevens has decided out of an abundance of caution to cancel our weekly Friday morning meetings through April 24th. The shutdown of our meetings could be longer if there isn't a significant change in the COVID-19 pandemic here in Washington State.

And, just as importantly, our Corks and Kegs Annual fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, April 18th has been postponed until Saturday, September 26th. Those who have already purchased tickets can hold on to them since we are simply postponing our event. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact someone from our Club for more clarification etc.

Maintaining our distance from one another and doing the simple thinks to protect one another is essential at this time. No hugs, no handshakes and people maintaining a comfortable distance from one another is the safest practice at this time. In the meantime, Club members can be in contact with one another through our new Facebook social page, calling one another to see how they are doing or a simple text will send the same message.....is certainly an example to one other that you and I care about each and everyone of our members. Stay tuned. More to come as we continue to monitor the progress of defeating this virus.

2020 Scholarship Applications

Our 2020 Academic and Vocational Scholarship Applications are now available for graduating high seniors who plan to pursue further education at a college, university or vocational school. The application can be completed on your computer. Print it out, sign it, then send it along with the required documents to the email at the bottom of the application page (lmorehouse@sherwoodcs.org).

There are specific requirements for each and the deadline for both is April 10, 2020. The Committee is looking into alternative ways to accept applications. Please stay tuned for updated information.
