Tonya spoke about how development in Lake Stevens occurs and how the plans are developed. The Sewer District has received over $18 million dollars from developers for permits with the funds going to pay on the debt of the Sewer District especially for their new, state of the art facility.

 

The Lake Stevens Sewer District was formed in 1957 by Jim Mitchell and his wife, both strong community leaders. In 1965 the district was providing sewerage service both collection and treatment. From a brief history of the Sewer District Tonya talked about the most harmful products to put down you sink, toilet or disposal. Prescription medicine, flushable wipes, dental floss, paper towels and Kleenex, Qtips, matches, toys and industrial chemicals are extremely harmful to the sewage system.

 

The only items that should go down your drains are water, toilet paper and human waste. Back flow prevention is part of the Lake Stevens system that prevents rodents from coming into the pipes.  Our system is much better than the system in King County.

 

The goal is to meet the challenge of protecting the environment and providing quality sewer service to the community. "Be the change" was her closing comment. Accepting their challenge is the greatest investment we can give to each other and to our surroundings.
