American Cancer Society
Katie Tormohlen, Community Development Manager for the American Cancer Society Everett Branch was our guest speaker this past Friday, March 23rd. Katie is gearing up for her 3rd "Relay for Life," a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. She has both a professional and personal passion for the organization and the work that the American Cancer Society does.

Cancer has no boundries and can affect anyone one of us. Katie's passion for her work might be a result of both her mom and dad each having cancer. Relay for Life of North Snohomish County is scheduled for July 14-15 from 12 pm to 8 am at Asbery Field in Marysville. You can join the Relay for Life event by going to their website at RelayforLife.org/NorthSnohomishCoWA. With every dollar raised, we are helping the American Cancer Society be there for those affected by every cancer in every community, including those who are currently dealing with a cancer diagnosis and those who may face a diagnosis in the future. Some maybe able to avoid a diagnosis altogether because of education and risk reduction.

Katie has been with the American Cancer Society for three years. She got involved after helping her mom's Relay team raise almost $12,000 in the first year. Research grants in the Seattle area amount to $13.2 million dollars. Now her dad has cancer and will never be cured but is enrolled in a clinical trial. Last year, the organization decided to make Relay for Life a county-wide effort.

Katie graduated from Washington State University in 2009 with a BA in Journalism and Communications and a Minor in English with an emphasis on the Sciences.

Thought of the Week - Who Said It?
"I think kindness is my number one attribute in a human being. I'll put it before any of the things like courage or bravery or generosity or anything else...Kindness - that simple word. To be kind -it covers everything, to my mind. If you're kind, that's it."
