Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County
Vicci Hilty, Executive Director of the Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County was our guest speaker last Friday giving an overview of domestic violence in the county. Vicci is an active member of the community and is currently the Past President of the Everett-Port Gardner Rotary Club. A native Texan transplanted to the Pacific Northwest 30 years ago.
Domestic violence doesn't involve just women but, men as well. DVS operates the shelter for the county serving the community for 42 years. They have created a safe place for people in domestic violence situations. The Shelter began in the 1980's  in an old farm house with limited space turning away 1,500-1,800 annually. In order to provide a larger shelter, Vicci agreed to raise over $10 million dollars to build one. An old military training site was donated but it took five years to finalize the agreement and transfer of the property.

Opened with 13 unit shelter with a private bath instead of a communal bath. Families can stay in a private room with a bath to take care of the children. The real goal is to make the families as comfortable as possible in a safe environment. Kids go through a lot of trauma and they are off the charts on ACES. Sometimes the cycle continues when the children see an abusive father who controls the world and some begin acting out like their father, continuing the cycle. The challenge is working together to solve the problem and even larger challenge is preventing it in the future.

In conclusion, the Mission Statement of the Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County is dedicated to ending domestic abuse by providing a wide range of services for victims and facilitating change.
