Rotary District 5030-2010-2011 Literacy Project

Books for the World

                                                                                                   In conjunction with

                   Rotarians at Work Day

 

Who? Rotary District 5030 in cooperation with

District 9300 South Africa and other US Rotary Clubs

What? Gently used or new books:

Picture/story books (pre-K-6)

  Adult level fiction

  K-12 textbooks in sets of 10 or more (no US history, world history OK)

  Professional (current medical, International law, etc)

  Encyclopedia sets (under 20 yrs old)

  Magazines - National Geographic, Smithsonian

                                           (NO news magazines)

When? Gather books from now until Rotarians at Work Day in March 2011. On that date we will sort, pack and ship books to Texas for shipment to South Africa or India.

Where do I get the books?

Sources for new or gently used books:

  Rotarians, friends, neighbors

  Schools, libraries

  Churches, Synagogues, Temples

  Publishers

Why? Because the need for books is much greater than their resources.

How? Appoint a Literacy Chair

  Collect lots of books

  Be in touch with District 5030 Literacy Committee (rjginn@juno.com), 206-232-7527.

  Partner with groups: youth, other service clubs, churches, etc.

  Dedicate some club funds to help with expenses ($2,500 for a container, $4,000 for shipping, boxes, etc.

  Find donors  & sponsors for heavy duty cartons (18"x12"x12"), packing tape, pallets, shipping to Texas

 

Volunteer on Rotarians at Work Day when we sort, pack & ship
