Judge James Robart

August 15 at Noon
The Westin, 1900 5th Ave

Federal Judge James Robart was nominated to the Washington US District Court in 2003 by George W Bush and was confirmed to that position by a unanimous vote of 99-0 by the US Senate. Democratic Senator Patty Murray has praised Robart for "his generous sense of community and service through his work with at-risk and special needs youth.”

On February 3, 2017, he famously issued a temporary restraining order on President Trump’s travel and immigration ban on the citizens of seven majority Muslim countries. This earned a furious tweet from the President labeling this highly respected jurist as "a so-called judge." Subsequent credible death threats caused federal marshals to put the Robarts under their protection for several months thereafter. His ruling was upheld six days later by a unanimous ruling of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Judge Robart will address Rotary on this case and other constitutional challenges currently faced by our democracy.

Steve Griessel Shares Insights on the Washington Wine Industry

Bill Weisfield introduced Steve Griessel of Betz Family Winery and the vice chair of the Washington Wine Commission as the “ultimate entrepreneur.”  Steve ran the largest tourism business in South Africa before he left for the United States and found his way to Woodinville and Betz Winery. Steve started his lively presentation with some facts about the Washington wine industry:
  • There are now 900 wineries in the state
  • It has grown from producing 30,000 tons of grapes to 230,000
  • The economic impact of the industry is $4.8 billion
  • They are now second behind only apples as the top ag product in our state

20+ Year Seattle 4 Rotarians – special recognition

Wednesday, August 22nd
12:00 – 1:30 pm @ Hyatt Olive 8

For our loyal, tenured Seattle 4 members who have been with the club for 20 years or longer, please join us at lunch for special recognition. We’d like to take the opportunity to publicly thank you with a small token of our appreciation for your committed service to giving back through Rotary. We have more than 100 members with service beyond 20 years, and we hope to see you all there!

SRSF Opportunity Grant

The Seattle Rotary Service Foundation announced the opening of the 2018 Opportunity Grants cycle.  This funding program works to be responsive to the preferences of our member donors and the needs of our community, recognizing that sometimes our usual structure of annual grants does not make funds available when special opportunities, emergencies, and unique needs arise.

The maximum grant will be $7,500 and the minimum is $500.  All applications must be received by SRSF by December 1, 2018.
Applications for these grants must come through the regular Seattle Rotary Service Committees.

2018-2019 ROTARY ACADEMY

Registration is now open for the 2018-2019 Rotary Academy which will start this September. The Rotary Academy is a comprehensive self-paced study program of Rotary information — great for both new and experienced Rotarians and anyone considering club or district leadership positions.
