Seattle Rotary Service Foundation Opportunity Grants

The Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF) has announced a new pilot program called “Opportunity Grants”.  SRSF is trying to be responsive to the preferences of our member donors and the needs of our community, recognizing that sometimes our usual structure of annual grants does not make funds available when special opportunities, emergencies, and unique needs arise.

All applications must be received by SRSF by December 1, 2017.

Wider World of Rotary

By Virginia McKenzie

Seattle Rotary 4 is actively supporting the effort to provide hearing screening to all newborns in Mongolia. By partnering with the Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss and the Rotary Peace Avenue Club in Mongolia, we have been able to tap into expertise and resources well beyond our capability. The end result of this collaboration will be a very robust pediatric audiology capability for all of Mongolia where none currently exists. Read below for a heartwarming result of Seattle 4's involvement in the Save the Silent World project.

Story of the day! Last week the Mongolia media aired a news story on the Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss and our program to develop newborn hearing screening, pediatric audiology, and early intervention services for babies and children with hearing loss in Mongolia. A father who lives in the countryside saw the news segment and drove hundreds of miles with his son to seek help from our program. His son has bilateral atresia (absence of ear canal) which means that sound waves were not getting through effectively to his inner ear, thus impacting his ability to hear. The Mongolian professionals in our audiology training program worked with our Global Foundation audiologists to test his hearing. They then fit him on the spot with a hearing device that uses bone conduction to bypass the damaged outer and middle ear, and send clearer, more crisp sound directly to his inner ear. When we put it on, he beamed. He instantly loved the device. What a life-changing experience for this young boy and his family!
