Dr. Gary Gilliland, A Stake in the ground for cancer research
October 10 at noon
The Westin, 1900 5th Ave.
By 2025, cancer researchers will have developed curative therapeutic approaches for most if not all cancers. That’s the stake placed in the ground by Dr. Gary Gilliland, president and director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The eradication of cancer is an ambitious goal, one that demands tenacity, scientific excellence, collaboration, and breakthrough creativity. Fortunately, Fred Hutch, with its world-renowned and Nobel-laureate researchers, is fully committed to that goal.
Dr. Gilliland will visit next week to update us on the ground-breaking research at Fred Hutch on cancer and other diseases and the impact that research has on our community. He’ll answer your questions about the past, present, and future of cancer research.
Growing up in Seattle, Noah Purcell, Washington’s solicitor general, learned the value of diversity in community at an early age as a Beacon Hill native and proud graduate of Franklin High School, where he was introduced to law on the mock trial team. Purcell was thrust into the national spotlight in early 2017 when he successfully argued Washington state’s victory in federal court that led to a temporary restraining order against President Trump’s travel ban on immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries. As Purcell recounted the events to Rotarians, joined by his wife, Jasmin, in the audience, he said one of his proudest moments was the recognition he later received from Franklin High’s students, including many immigrants, refugees, and Muslim students, in support of Washington state’s stance against the ban.

Saturday, November 10
7:30-11:00 pm @ Union Gospel Mission, 318 2nd Ave. Extension South
Join fellow Rotarians on a search and rescue evening with Seattle's Union Gospel Mission.
The night is spent providing wool blankets, food, water, and other supplies to our homeless neighbors. It also offers them the opportunity to come inside for a night of safe shelter at the Mission.
This event is for Seattle Rotary members, family, and friends.
The Seattle Rotary Service Foundation announced the opening of the 2018 Opportunity Grants cycle. This funding program works to be responsive to the preferences of our member donors and the needs of our community, recognizing that sometimes our usual structure of annual grants does not make funds available when special opportunities, emergencies, and unique needs arise.
The maximum grant will be $7,500 and the minimum is $500. All applications must be received by SRSF by December 1, 2018.
Applications for these grants must come through the regular Seattle Rotary Service Committees.
For more information on committees, including those that do not have regular meeting times, see thecommittee page on our website. Meeting times and locations are subject to change, contact committee chairs for more information.
