Ground Breaking Cancer REsearch in Our Backyard, Thanks to Rotary!

August 29 at noon
The Grand Hyatt, 721 Pine
You may already know the historic role Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center played in bone-marrow transplantation.  Now you can learn about groundbreaking research at The Hutch to rebuild the immune system in transplant recipients, a long-standing challenge associated with this life-saving procedure.
Dr. Lorenzo Iovino is a Rotary Global Grant Scholarship recipient from the University of Pisa, Italy.  Thanks to Rotary, Dr. Iovino performs his latest research in the lab of Dr. Jarrod Dudakov, where they use zinc supplementation to regenerate the thymus and rebuild the immune system.
Lorenzo told his fascinating and entertaining story to our International Services Committee in April and we just knew the entire club had to hear it.  Come meet Lorenzo next week, bring a guest or prospective member, and spread the word.  See you then.

10+ Year Seattle 4 Rotarians – special recognition

For our loyal, tenured Seattle #4 members who have been with the club for 10-20 years, please join us at lunch on August 29 for a special recognition. We’d like to take the opportunity to publicly thank you with a small token of our appreciation for your committed service to giving back through Rotary. We have more than 100 members with service beyond 10 years, and we hope to see you all there!
For our 20+ year members who could not make it to the August 22 luncheon, please stop by registration the next time you attend to pick up your pin!

Immersive Technology: Building a New Reality

The bell rang and Todd Summerfelt and Trish Bostrom led off with an energetic rendition of This Land is Your Land. Dozens of our members who have been in the club for over 20 years received special recognition, and Tim Bendokas profiled another of our Rotary Legends, defined as those members who push forward and think outside the box.  Rotary Legend Laurel James is the founder of Super Jock 'n Jill, the first running shoe store in the US, which is still going strong under the leadership of her sons.  She raised five boys through 18 moves while her husband served the Air Force and then as a single mother and opened her store to take care of her family.

Rotary Cares

Congratulations to member Heather Fitzpatrick for her new role as President and CEO of Wellspring Family Services.

SRSF Opportunity Grant

The Seattle Rotary Service Foundation announced the opening of the 2018 Opportunity Grants cycle.  This funding program works to be responsive to the preferences of our member donors and the needs of our community, recognizing that sometimes our usual structure of annual grants does not make funds available when special opportunities, emergencies, and unique needs arise.
The maximum grant will be $7,500 and the minimum is $500.  All applications must be received by SRSF by December 1, 2018.
Applications for these grants must come through the regular Seattle Rotary Service Committees.

Registration is now open for the 2018-2019 Rotary Academy which will start this September. The Rotary Academy is a comprehensive self-paced study program of Rotary information — great for both new and experienced Rotarians and anyone considering club or district leadership positions.

Unless  protests are received in the time period required (seven days), the following will receive a "Welcome to Rotary" notification that their membership has been accepted:
  1. Kela Hall, President / CEO of KD Hall Communications – YRL membership with a Business Consultants & Services classification.  Proposer, Cathy Gibson, and Seconder, Jaime Mendez.
  2. Kelly O’Brien, Vice President of Philanthropy for Fred Hutch – Corporate membership with a Health Care classification.  Proposer, Carl Behnke, and Seconder, Karl Ege.
  3. Arlesia Bailey, Sr. Director of Community Health Program & Development – Individual membership with a Health Care classification.  Proposer, Doug Picha, and Seconder, Kari Rallo.
