What does Putin Want?

July 26 at Noon
The Westin, 1900 5th Ave.

Who better to answer that question than Seattle 4’s very own Jill Dougherty? Dave Ross of Seattle’s Morning News on KIRO-FM will be asking the questions.

Jill is a Distinguished Visiting Practitioner at the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and a CNN Contributor who provides expert commentary on Russia.

She served as CNN correspondent for three decades, reporting from more than 50 countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, China, North Korea and Russia. She was CNN's Moscow Bureau Chief, covering many significant news events in Russia and the former Soviet Union, including the presidencies of Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin, Russia's post-Soviet economic transition, terrorist attacks, the conflict in Chechnya, and the reported hacking of the 2016 U.S. election.

Jill continues to report for CNN as a contributor from Seattle and Moscow regarding current events in Russia.

Wider World of Rotary

by Cathy Gibson

RI President Ian Riseley announced that the President-elect of Rotary International, Sam Owori, died July 13.

RIPE Sam had undergone surgery in Texas that he had been planning for some time, and there were post-operative complications from which he couldn’t recover.

Rotarian Owori was chief executive officer of the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda. Earlier, he was executive director of the African Development Bank, managing director of Uganda Commercial Bank Ltd., and director of Uganda Development Bank. He has studied law, employment relations, business management, corporate resources management, microfinance, and marketing at institutions in England, Japan, Switzerland, Tanzania, and the United States, including Harvard Business School.

Since becoming a Rotarian in 1978, Owori has served Rotary as regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, regional RI membership coordinator, RI Representative to the United Nations Environment Program and UN-Habitat, and RI director. He has been a member or chair of several committees, including the International PolioPlus Committee, the Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force, and the Audit Committee. Most recently, Owori served as Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, chair of The Rotary Foundation's Finance Committee, and a member of the Investment Committee. Owori is a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation, and he and his wife, Norah, are Major Donors and Paul Harris Fellows.

Sam was the first Ugandan and just the second Rotarian from Africa to be elected to the highest office of Rotary International.
