The Annual Senior Dinner is a Club Favorite
By Sandra Hixson-Matthews
The Rotary Club of Maple Valley was chartered in May of 1985. In December of that year, the oldest running service project of the club was begun. This past Thursday evening Rotarians prepared and served a special holiday dinner to our honored citizens for the 29th time. Rotarian Storm McNeil is our most recent chair for this event and, in addition to the planning and shopping, he started roasting the lovely prime rib early in the day. A bit later a team of Rotary elves arrived to set up, prepare the remainder of the meal, make gift bags, set tables, open wine bottles and greet the guests. By 5:30 pm, with precision orchestration, everyone had a beautiful meal before them, a full team of eager servers and wine stewards to meet their every need, a gift from the members of the Rotary Club, and the company of friends and neighbors. Following dinner there was live music to finish off the evening. Members of the club feel that this is one of our most important activities and truly enjoy giving thanks in a tangible way to those who built our community and paved the way for all we have and do.
If you know of a senior citizen who doesn’t get out, please consider getting them connected with the community centers in our area for the regular senior lunches. Getting out to eat and visit with others adds greatly to quality of life. We are very fortunate to have the programs here for our honored citizens and it is our responsibility to make sure they can get there. Have a very Merry Christmas everyone!
