If third grade students at Shadow Lake, Lake Wilderness, Rock Creek and Glacier Park Elementary schools don't know the meaning of philanthropy, they can now look it up! Each student received their very own dictionary thanks to the Rotary Club of Maple Valley! This is the fifth year that our Rotary Club has participated in the dictionary program and handed out approximately 600 dictionaries to students in the Tahoma School District. Many thanks to our group of dedicated Rotarians in getting these books handed out to our children!

Maple Valley Rotary Finishes Another Great Year

By Sandra Hixson-Matthews

It’s been a great year for the Rotary Club of Maple Valley.  Sean Henderson finished his year with a donation to the Burundi BioSand Water Filter training program.  He presented the check to Seconde Nimenya after her presentation to the club at Friday’s meeting.  Seconde was born and raised in Burundi, Africa where education is only available for those who can afford to pay for it, including elementary education.  She was fortunate to have extended family members who could sponsor her and she did not take this for granted.  She went on to college and holds an MBA.  Committed to giving back and helping  in their home country, Seconde and her husband Chalver are now working with a non-profit that trains people on how to make and install BioSand water filter systems.  Once educated, those who need clean water can build the filters, sell them, and train the purchasers in their use.  The Nimenyas will be going to Burmundi next month with Friendly Water for the World to conduct a training program.  Seconde is an author and a Rotarian with the Mukeltio club.  Her book, Evolving Through Adversity, can be ordered through her website of the same name or through Amazon.com.  If you are interested in the water project, go to www.friendlywaterfortheworld.com.   Recognizing the positive impact of early education in developing countries, for over 12 years Maple Valley Rotary has been giving scholarships to elementary age students in Cameroon, Africa.  Image

By Sandra Hixson-MatthewsImage

Fourth Grader, Brennan Snodgrass is shown here helping his dad, Rotarian Kelly Snodgrass and fellow Rotarians to hand out dictionaries at Lake Wilderness Elementary last October.  Brennan received his dictionary the previous year and was eager to share the experience with this year’s third grade class.

Once again the Seattle Thunderbirds Hockey Team is having their Rotary Dictionary Night.  The Thunderbirds are donating 1/2 of the ticket price for their game against the Kelowna Rockets on Friday, January 25th to promote literacy in Western Washington.  The game is at the ShoWare Center in Kent.  Anyone who attends and specifies they are there for the Rotary night will be helping their local Rotary club to provide dictionaries to third grade students.  Maple Valley Rotary has participated in the dictionary program for the past four years and gives approximately 600 dictionaries to students in the Tahoma School District each fall.  The $12 per ticket raised from the Thunderbirds event goes a long way toward helping to purchase those dictionaries.  If you order tickets to attend, please tell them you would like to name Maple Valley as your Rotary Club.  Thanks!

Interact membership pins were also presented to all of the club members in attendance, shown here on the staircase.  You can find the same photo on the Maple Valley Rotary Facebook page where those in the photo can tag themselves.  Also pictured with the Co Presidents and Kirk is the Club’s Faculty Advisor, Dave Peters.  On Saturday, December 15th Interact club members came out in force to help with Shop With a Cop.  This is a long standing program where children who need to have a good experience with a cop get to shop with the help of an officer at Walmart for a special Christmas gift for themselves.  This year 388 children were able to shop and the Interact volunteers helped to make it a smooth process.

Maple Valley Rotarians Serve 28th Annual Senior Holiday Dinner
Image

By Sandra Hixson-Matthews

On Thursday, December 13th, Maple Valley Rotarians served a holiday meal of prime rib with all of the trimmings to our honored Senior Citizens.  A tradition since the club started in 1985, the special event alternates venues between the Maple Valley and Black Diamond Community Centers where guests come from both communities.  This year it was Black Diamond’s turn and a record number of over 150 Seniors were served.  Storm McNeil arrived at 6:00 AM to start the ribs roasting and was soon followed by fellow Rotarians as well as other volunteers and staff of the Black Diamond Community Center.  Two notable images in this montage are in the center.  BDCC Director, Cheryl Hanson is pictured with MVCC Senior Program Director, Allison Scott.  And the young man in the Santa hat is Andrew Walker.  Andrew was an outgoing MV Rotary exchange student to Turkey in 2008/09.  He is now a student at Arizona State and contacted us to volunteer for the Senior Dinner while home for the Holidays.  Andrew is a Rotaract member in Arizona.  Rotaract is to college what Interact is at the high school level.  Way to give back Andrew.  It was a pleasure having you on the team!  By the way, Andrew saw mention of this event in the Voice of the Valley.  Maple Valley Rotary wishes to thank the Voice for their strong support over the years!

Author and Public Speaker, Al Foxx Inspired Rotarians

By Sandra Hixson-Matthews

Rotarians were treated to a very entertaining talk by internationally known author and motivational speaker, Al Foxx.  Al shares his very personal story of a life changing motorcycle accident and what it means to start over with what you have.

Al talked about the book of his life being torn from his hands before he was done.  He said it was torn in half and the half he had already read was returned to him.  Now he had to write his own ending to the book he’d started.  “We’re all born with a book of blank pages.”  Al says.  “It doesn’t matter what the outside looks like, what’s up to us is what the pages say.  Are you writing a book people want to read?  Are you writing a book that can inspire people?  Are you writing a book about how to help people believe in their own possibilities?  It’s up to you.”

Al speaks of three important attitudes… first, to accept the book you are given.  “Until you accept what you have been given, there is no way to write a happy ending.”  When Al was in a wheel chair, he came to realize it wasn’t the wheel chair that made him unhappy, it was his attitude and what he focused on.  Second, believe you can write a happy ending.  To accomplish this, Al suggests you lighten up.  Don’t take everything in life so seriously!  And third, to care about others.  When you are listening to someone else and being there for them, you are not thinking of your own problems.  When you make them feel better, you feel better too because you are not dwelling on yourself.

Some of Al’s notable quotes are:

“Winners Don’t Quit”

“Focus on what you have, not what you don’t have.”

“We’re all winners.  What makes a winner?  A winner is somebody who knows it is not all about them.  A winner is somebody who cares about other people.  A winner is somebody who knows how to love and be loved.  A winner is somebody who treats other people like they’re winners too.  So, whenever you meet someone, treat them like a winner.”

Al is the author of the book, Achieving No Limits, and the founder and president of the not-for-profit Winners Don’t Quit Association.  His book can be found on Amazon.com or at bookstores but if you order from his website, AttitudeMan.com, you can get an autographed copy.

Reminder:  Our Friday morning meeting on December 7th will be held at the Black Diamond Gym on Lawson Street at 7:10AM.  Please call (206) 349-2424 if you would like to attend as a guest so we can let our caterer, Cindy Gregory of Cedar Grill, know.  Come see Maple Valley Rotary’s Centennial Project!

Honored Citizen Holiday Luncheon December 13th
Maple Valley Rotary was chartered in May of 1985.  The Senior Dinner was a first year project and has continued every year since.  Rotarians prepare and serve a special holiday meal to our honored senior citizens at Christmas time.  The event rotates between the Maple Valley Community Center and the Black Diamond Community Center.  Traditionally a dinner, this year luncheon will be served at noon in Black Diamond.  This is a photo collage of the dinner in 2005, also held in Black Diamond.Image

Maple Valley Rotary Hosted Party in the Park
ImageTuesday, September 18th was a lovely evening in the Fred Habenicht Maple Valley Rotary Park.  Rotary members hosted several local visitors to an informal gathering and root beer floats.  On hand to discuss the park project were several members of the Habenicht family, including Fred’s wife, Dorothy, son and daughter in law, Brad and Marla, brother and sister in law, Gary and Mindy.  Also present to share his vision for the park was site planner, Lauchlin R. Bethune.  Rotarian George Brannen, his wife Carolyn, and friend Richard Kinga came to share experiences with Maple Valley Rotary’s projects in Cameroon Africa.
Maple Valley City Council members Victoria Laiss Jonus and Sean P. Kelly stopped as well as several members of the community and Maple Valley Rotarians.  Some are pictured here.  It was wonderful seeing everyone and sharing time in such a beautiful place.  I think Richard Kings captured the intent of the event best when we were walking down to the river.  He said, “This is such a beautiful and peaceful place.  Such a treasure, and there are probably many people who don’t know it is here for them.”
Many thanks to all who helped, and there were many so forgive me if I miss anyone.  Marla and Dorothy Habenicht met me at the park and helped haul things in and set up.  This only two days after Marla completed the 60 mile walk for a cure and she set up the entire refreshment station!  In addition, Shelley Emmons, Traci Rice, Cheryl Cochran, Fritz Gottfried, Gary Habenicht, Jeff Snelling, Mark Cairns, Bill Woodcock, Richard Kinga, Ric and Cindy Holm, Brad Habenincht, Patti Jenson, Dale Jenson, Shane Davies, Storm McNeil, and Sam Matthews all helped with set up, tear down, hauling things in and out, or all of the above.  Thank you!
Shane Davies was the winner of the door prize.  Congratulations Shane.

Maple Valley Rotary's First Quarterly Public Open House
Please mark your calendars and join us at Fred Habenicht Maple Valley Rotary Park on Tuesday September 18th from 5 to 7 PM for an informal open house to give members of the community a chance to see some of our works and to ask questions as well as to enjoy a root beer float together.  The two subjects we will be covering at this event are the park, past, present, and future as well as our projects in Cameroon.  I would like to have as many Rotarians attend as possible to mingle and speak with attendees.  Please invite members of the community you know as well.  The more the merrier.  If we run out of ice cream, there is a store right there.  These events are meant to be easy and informal with little need for preparation.  I do need a few volunteers for set up, tear down, and to help serve.  Please don't be shy.Image

Both Candidates for King County Sheriff Speak
by Sandra Hixson-Matthews

Image     In back to back Friday morning meetings Maple Valley Rotarians heard from both candidates for King County Sheriff.  Pictured on the left, with Gary and Mindy Habenicht, and Bill Woodcock is Sergeant John Urquhart who addressed the club on September 7th.  On the right with Sargeant at Arms, Denny Pierre is Sheriff Steve Strachan who spoke on the 14th.  The high five came after they discovered they are both Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Rotary is a nonpartisan organization and gives equal time to opposing sides whenever a candidate speaks at a club meeting.  Sheriff Strachan came in uniform to speak, not as a candidate but as King County Sheriff.  Both spoke on where the department is and what things can be improved upon then fielded questions from the audience.  After each talk, members of the club and guests were left with good information and a sense that the job of Sheriff is not taken lightly.

Always involved in athletics, Kayla excelled in basketball in high school, and received a basketball scholarship at the U of W. After her freshman year, she had a goal of becoming an even better player which, after a summer of hard work, became a reality, and Kayla started her sophomore year. Nepal Braille Library
StoryThumbnail

In a country where it is believed that a person with a disability is paying for a past life sin, it is not surprising to learn that there are limited resources for children and adults who are blind. Add to that fact that the country of Nepal is one of the poorest in the world, and the effect is compounded due to the limited resources of producing Braille. In the words of a Napali, “There has been no way for visually impaired Nepalis to broaden their horizons. There was simply no reading material available in Braille.”
