Opening
President Teri welcomed us with a fun historical fact about the naming of the “Tattler” which was named after the Great Depression when the economy had finally stabilized; there were several attempts at naming the newsletter, before finally settling on the “Tattler”. Unfortunately no one suggested "The Gossip Column".

Western Libraries Heritage Resources has been going over our stored records at Moles Farewell Tributes on Lakeway for the last couple of year steered by the History committee lead by Brian Griffin and JC Hickman. They have created a list of items they would like to store for us and ready for us to sign a Deed of Gift document.  The board wants to think about this further.  There are some records that they do not want and the dilemma remains on how to store those.  Teri is going to put out a plea to members about storage room availabily.  Moles Funeral Home would like them removed completely now that John Moles is no longer in the club.

  • Social CommitteeAnn Jones gave a Social Committee report on the car rally last Saturday.  Ann noted that it was a fun, entertaining look at Whatcom County and that she had as much fun as if she were traveling in another country.  The detailed directions took participants all over the county with prizes awarded to six different teams (i.e. cars of people).  A big thanks to all who participated and helped make the event a success.
  • Minister of Fun CommitteePaula McCandlis reminded everyone that she needs more members for this committee, otherwise she will have to regularly be the Minister of Fun which she reminded everyone could get expensive!

Program:
Dave Mauro gave an enriching presentation detailing his mountain climbing experiences.  Dave works for UBS as a financial advisor and has summitted the Seven Summits which are made up of the highest mountains in each of the seven continents.  The Seven Summits are as follows: Africa – Kilimanjaro; Antarctica – Mt. Vinson; Australia – Mt. Kosciuszko; Europe – Mt. Elbrus; North America – Denali; South America – Aconcagua; Asia – Mt. Everest.

Dave discussed how the pursuit of Big Goals, such as summitting the Seven Summits, can guide us all in our lives as we all have our own “Mt. Everest.”  Dave’s theory is that “keeping your eye on the prize” or focusing on reaching the summit during the process of obtaining your Big Goal can in fact hinder your ability to reach the end.  Instead, he suggests focusing on the next step rather than the end goal.  For instance, Mt. Everest was just lot of little mountains that he had to climb before reaching the summit which made the journey more manageable.  At times, Dave’s goal would be to take just 10 more steps, or 5 more steps; this is what kept him going when his Big Goal felt overwhelming.  Only focus on the little mountain in front of you.

Additionally, Dave stressed the importance of finding joy in each day.  If you didn’t find any joy in yesterday’s mountain, it will be difficult to move forward on the next step of your journey.  He reminded us that joy can be found in small things, such as the joy he found one day climbing when he was able to defrost cheddar cheese he wanted to eat by placing each packet of cheese in his armpits!  Dave’s view is that joy is not optional when going after Big Goals but is necessary and needs to be worked for and labeled.

In addition to his financial and mountain climbing career, Dave is an improv personality.  Several Rotarians wrote down sentences and Dave acted them out to the topic of “veterinary medicine.”  Luckily one of the sentences written down had to do with sheep – what are the odds?!

Thank you Dave for your inspirational presentation!
