President Sandy’s focus on international aspects of Rotary was on the country of Taiwan.  He spoke of the country’s interest in baseball, it’s culture and religion and then noted that the first Rotary Cub was formed their in 1948 and is now the home of over 540 Clubs and the International Convention (which Peter Theisen will attend).
The invocation was by Al Archer who reminded us that it is a privilege to live in this country - whether we were born here or immigrated here and that all of us should set asides differences and work on improving the world around us.  At the closing of the invocation, President Sandy awarded Al his Paul Harris Plus One pin for Al’s long history of service.  Joe Coons had used his personal RI Points to give Al this award before he passed away.

There will be a Board meeting today, May 9 at 4:30 at the Bellingham Legal Center.
President Sandy invited members of the club to march in the Bellingham Memorial Parade on May 25th.
He also noted that the Club is a steward of the Sunnyland Memorial Park and there will be a clean up project on Saturday, May 18 from ten to noon.
Cathy Buckley announced that the Service Committee is looking for two more service grants.  If you have a recipient or project in mind, please submit it.
Lisa Saar got a hearty round of applause when it was announced that she was the Minister of Fun and thought she was scheduled for another week but went to the podium, winged it, and had everyone put a dollar in glass and say what they were grateful for.  Nice work Lisa.

2019-2020 Planning:
Peter Theisen is the program chair for next year and is looking for help and ideas for programs and great speakers.

Shauna Naf briefly described the club app which allows what’s on the club website to be on your phone NOW. She outlined the steps to get set up and how to use it. Big news there will be tech help each week for those who need help.  Remember there will not be a printed Roster distributed as usual in July.
Shauna announced that Doug Cole and Del VandeKerk will be taking photos May 13th, May 20th and June 10th for any member that wants to update their picture for our roster.  Contact Sandee is you want to sign-up.

Guests of Rotarians:
Lynda Hinton introduced Zach Von Schneidau with the Harris Company
Lisa Saar brought Robert Bystrom
Felicity Dye introduced Reece Carpenter former Rotary Exchange Student from Rotary Club of Oregon City
Our program speaker was Yanniv Attar, Conductor of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra.  He was introduced by Gail Ridenauer, Executive Director of the Symphony and a member of our Club.
Yanniv, noted that the Orchestra was started more than 40 years ago by five musicians who started playing together and it grew from there to our current Orchestra.   Among other current programs, the Orchestra’s “Youth Engagement Program” annually reaches out to some 10,000 students in our community.  He also announced that the Symphony’s Board of Directors had voted to change the name of the Symphony to the “Bellingham Symphony Orchestra”.
Yanniv provided an overview of the upcoming season. He spoke about the Symphony’s "Harmony from Discord Series” in which the Symphony performs pieces written by composers in a time of oppression.  He noted that one of the performances will feature (in the second  half) the work of composers who wrote while held in Jewish concentration camps during the Holocaust.  (Yanniv did his doctoral thesis on these composers.)  It is surprising to most people, he noted that prisoners were composing music while imprisoned in the camps.  In the first half of the program, the symphony will feature composers who managed to flee the Holocaust.  Excerpts from these composers were played for the club.  Yanniv noted his gratitude to the community that supports such innovative performances as most communities want to hear only music that is familiar to them.
In the rest of his talk, Yanniv provided an overview of other performances we can expect this coming season from the “Bellingham Symphony Orchestra”.
