Program:
Dr. Don Berry was introduced by Sandy McIntire. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Berry is the Director of the Intensive Care Unit at St. Josephs Hospital. He described our outstanding 24 bed facility that is fully staffed 24 hours per day and reviewed several exceptional cases of life saving results that would not have been possible in many other ICU facilities with less skilled professionals.
Intensive Care Units were introduced in the 1960’s when technology advanced beyond the Iron Lung and the rapid growth of many new skills and advanced equipment continues to improve outcomes and allows many people to walk out of hospitals to resume productive lives that would not have been possible just a few years ago.
St. Josephs has adopted a “process approach" utilizing teams of professionals to assure consistent positive results. The ICU is now very much a “Medical Team” as compared to a more individual approach that has been more common in the past. We are fortunate to have such an outstanding facility in our city.
Dr Berry reminded all of us to review our Living Wills with our family members and cover a variety of possible health issues so the desired intents will be known as generally the patient is not able to communicate such wishes at the time decisions need to be made.
FINAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:
President Del thanked visiting past member and past president Dan Brown for attending our meeting.
