Feeding thousands of children daily is no small task! Join the Rotary Club of Bellingham on May 4, 2024 and pack meals for children in need and have a wonderful time serving with your hands. Our goal is to pack 30,000 meals in 3 hours. And we need to raise $8,700 for the materials to make it happen! Making this possible is only possible through the efforts of partners and volunteers like you. The meals packed will be sent to Sierra Leone, providing over 1,000 students nutritious meals so they can concentrate at school. More about Sierra Leone: Sierra Leone, a lush tropical country on the west coast of Africa that boasts beautiful beaches, picturesque mountains, and some of the richest natural resources and mineral deposits (including diamonds) in the world, is one of the poorest countries in the world. It consistently ranks as one of the least developed countries on the United Nations Human Development Index. It also has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world (children dying before reaching age five). Coupled with this overwhelming poverty, from 1991–2001, Sierra Leone was embroiled in a devastating civil war in which tens of thousands of people were killed and an estimated one million people were forced from their homes and villages—many raped, tortured, and/or drafted into rebel forces. The war destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure and has left its lasting scars, most notably on the children—leaving 320,000 children orphaned. Most people in Sierra Leone live in rural farming communities. A typical family dwelling in a village is a mud-walled home with a dirt floor and a thatched roof. Cooking is done by outdoor fire. Laundry, washing, and bathing are done in the nearest river or with water hauled from the closest water source. A typical family’s diet consists of rice, cassava root, and leafy greens. |

The title of our presentation will be our mission statement, "Building Community through Connection to the Land and Access to the Outdoors". Alan Alatorre-Barajas joined the Leadership Team in April 2023 and was previously a Vamos board member since the Fall of 2020. He was born in Seattle, WA and raised in Skagit County. He is a son of Mexican immigrants. Alan has been passionate about helping the Latine community connect with the outdoors since his experiences through North Cascades Institute after noticing the need for exposure and connection to the outdoors. Alan is currently working in education. He received his BA in Human Services and Master’s in Adult and Higher Education through Western Washington University. In his spare time, Alan enjoys reading, writing, walks in nature, and crafts. Jaime Friedrich was born and raised in Washington state in a tiny farming community on the Olympic Peninsula. Her love of the outdoors began with riding the horses that roamed the field behind her yard and playing with potato bugs at the community swimming pool. She moved to Bellingham in 2009 to attend Western Washington University where she majored in American Cultural Studies with an emphasis in American Indian studies and Teaching English as a Second Language. Her work teaching English has allowed her to travel abroad, inspiring a love of learning new languages and engaging with people whose cultures are different from her own. While she enjoys traveling to new places, her small-town upbringing has instilled a value of community and a complete adoration of the Pacific Northwest, which keeps her rooted in this special place. Jaime is excited to work with Vamos to continue building a Bellingham community that is more inclusive, accepting, and intentional. |
